More X-LS Encores

The attempt here is to give them character, while still sounding good. They're upgraded with mills, sonicap, and no-rez. Their's felt between the panels and the speaker box.

Looks pretty good. I like the industrial look of the side panels.

I take it that they are stacked on top of each other for the photo only?

Danny,
Question; You made a comment about stacking the speakers on top of each other. I have seen this done a few time with the top speaker inverted so the tweeter is on the bottom.  Do you have any experience with this? Is there any potential positives or negatives to doing this?
Thank You
Andrew

Stacking speakers causes cancellation effects that really destroy the response. Here is a post about it with good explanation and measurements to show the effect.  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=124751.msg1315189#msg1315189

Photo only. I have to give Danny $ next week for the bigger binding posts that fit the flatpacks.

If I did stack, it'd be tweeter to tweeter, but I imagine it wouldn't be "right".

Panels started as birch, then torched, then golden oak stain, and a little clear. Brass screws, steel washers. They're going with a redone council that has a hand finished brass plate for the controls, battery powered. New grille, and some more. Those photos aren't too soon. It's interesting though, all second hand/saved wood and brass.

The only way you can get a decent response from a stacked pair is to face one of them towards the front wall.

Well good thing I'm not a donkey that feels some strange need to waste time.

I got the cups today. They're not burned in, but they sound pretty damn good already.

I can see why they won an award between everything else in that price range. Can't wait to get an amp setup that's a little more open (new inductors).

They're very talented. They may not have the raw talent of speakers with two mid drivers, like my friends Piega's, but they image better. I don't expect them to be able to floor me with power ability to forcefully exert themselves in a shocking manner, but that doesn't do it for me anyway. The timbre is better, and that I'm sensitive too. I'm hoping it gets better as the break in, as that might be the one thing that makes me like other things, like the Horn's they are sitting on top of atm.

Hey Salis,

Great unconventional look to your Encores! You'll definitely notice a difference during burn in. My flat packs also required the bigger B.P. cup, however I used tube connectors
for final application instead. If you jumper wire both sets of connectors, you can compare the two. You will hear the difference and IMO it's not subtle. I have no interest in pitching the tube connectors, but it was money well spent for me. I'm also using them in an X-CS Encore I recently upgraded. While this will probably come as no surprise to A.C. members, the Encores "blow away"(dynamics, presence, soundstage...) my previous set up of B&W 601 S3's and their matching center. -John

Pretty cool huh. Everyone that has A/B'ed them to anything (even really good binding posts) say that as well.

Danny, my problem is that it's hard to commit to my cheaper speaker wire. I've got the White Lightening, and it's good but... I know for a fact I'd love some Analysis Plus some day when I can justify the $.

I wonder why they're so much better? Do people find them better than solid copper ones? Physically they aren't all that exceptional. The material is good, and the contact area. That being said I could only slightly wonder if it's the shape but the crimping pattern interferes with that.

The Encores might be better than a lot of people have been willing to use in a system of equivalent. A few of the review items talking about them lead me to believe they're more controlled in bass than reviews would make you believe, and their equipment was the flabber of bass. Flabby bass is one of the FIRST things to go with proper power conditioning.

Yeah, even some online magazines that gave them a great review and one of their top awards reviewed them with bottom of the barrel gear. I remember thinking I'm glad he liked them, but he never even heard what they are capable of.
