VR-4 Jr. Mkii compared to new models?
« on: 14 Jul 2014, 02:55 pm »
I sure do love the look and size of the VR-4 Jr. models but I wonder about the sound compared to something more modern like the VR-22.  Which is similar in price to the used VR-4 Jr.  So in the opinion of this circle, do you believe that ~3000 would be better spent on a pair of VR-4 Jr. or VR-22s.  The VR4s get much higher marks for appearance, and a possible deciding factor could be if Albert can upgrade the VR-4 Jr.s.  I'm not asking for someone to make my decision, I'm looking for educated opinions.

Thanks,
Jeff Brown

I own the VR-22's and am very happy with them
I have not listened to the VR-4 and therefore cannot compare the two.
I do like the looks of the VR-4 cabinetry better but went with the 22's to get maximum audio benefit for my dollar.
Nothing but positive things to say about my purchase and how I was treated by VSA.
This is the first speaker purchase for me that I don't find myself looking up the ladder to higher models as I am satisfied with the VR-22's.
I am sure you will be happy either way you decide.

The VR4-Jr is designed to be placed out into the room, versus the '22s near wall placement.  I would think that providing you have the space, the Jr is the better speaker.

The email I sent to Albert was probably a bit more clear on what I was looking for.  I apologize, but Niagara kind of hit one of hte issues I'm concerned with.  See the email to Albert below for more information.

Albert,
I am contemplating the VR-22s and a pair of VR-4 Jr. Mk ii models that have recently come on the used market.  Since you are the father of both of these speakers I would appreciate your input on the matter.

Are there any upgrades available for the VR-4Jr to bring it up to a more current sound?

One of the huge selling points of the VR-22 for me is how front wall friendly the placement is.  I don’t have a ton of room to work with as my listening room doubles as my formal living room.  I need to have the speakers about 3-10 inches from the wall.

The VR 4s are by far more attractive with the beautiful veneer finish, but sonically I’m concerned about the older driver technology.  As well as the optimal wall placement.  I do love that 2 cabinet look though, they are just lovely.

Once again I appreciate your feedback.  I would not imagine you have anything bad to say about either of them, but as in any design you know what the limitations were for each one.

Thank you,
Jeff Brown

I own a pair of VR4jrs and have had them for about 5 years.  I have never heard VR22s. However I will say that if you only can get the back of the cabinet out 6" from the front wall you will most likely have issues with boomy bass. My system is also located in a living room but the distance from the front wall to the back of the cabinet is 18" and I really wish I could pull them out another foot.  In my system in my room that is my experience. As always YMMV.

I think that for the Jr's, like the Sr's and 5's , the bass can be adjusted to the room and the the distance from walls by stuffing or unstuffing the port. Albert should help you with the question. I did hear the Jr's in a great system with very narrow side boundaries and they sounded beautiful, clean, and precise.
