Samsung TV Warning
« on: 18 Mar 2014, 02:31 pm »
Just a heads up. Our 7 month old Samsung TV irrevocably lost screen image, and after doing a little digging it appears Samsung has had many TVs fail due to blown caps and other reasons. Since we did not have a huge TV, just the UN32F5500 32”, they wanted us to bring about 50 miles from Chicago’s northside to Carol Stream for service. Awful service in general, and I’m not about to rent a car and with traffic spend two hours each way four times for this. Will try local repair or fix myself, but be warned about Samsung failures. If you don’t have a large set they may ask you to drive a long, long way to fix their mistake. I thought people who may be shopping Samsung should know this.

The company I work for has a tv and audio repair shop. We see a lot of tvs coming in for capacitor replacement. Samsung and some of the cheaper no name brands seem to be the worst.

Major bummer.

At work they bought a 65" Samsung. It had a vertical line running down the left side. Unfortunately they waited too long to test it so instead of being able to return it to where they bought it from they had to call Samsung for repair.

After many phone calls and the service company closing the ticket twice without doing anything, a guy shows up with a replacement panel. Not a whole TV, just the panel.

He spent an hour moving three boards from the bad TV to the replacement panel. Made no sense whatsoever to me. I would have thought that Samsung would have just put a refurbished TV in box and had him in and out of there in 10 minutes.

My question is who if anyone stands out in terms of quality?

I second that. Who makes a reliable LED TV right now? Is Panasonic a good choice? I know them for Plasma, but I have no idea about their LED performance. Samsung definitely tries to dick you around to lose those do not have patience. For me it's a matter of cost. It's cheaper to fix in Chicago than drive four times to Carol Stream. That is the only repair shop for the entire metro region. It's like telling you to drive from Rhode Island to New Hampshire for service. Samsung did have an old class action lawsuit I now see for plasma that has expired. Looks like nothing has changed.

Thanks for the video!

I have a few Samsungs in the house, ranging from 20" monitors to 50" plasmas.
Although I can't speak of their customer service, I can say that all of the units have worked flawlessly since day one.
If memory serves, the oldest is five years old, which happens to be the 50" that runs for 10 hours a day.

p.s. I love that video, sorry about that. It's fun to pull it out once in a while and show it off.

If my memory serves me correctly the Samsung had a lawsuit on LCDs with faulty capacitors too.

I wonder if Samsung is sourcing their capacitors from the same vendor as Onkyo which has had a decade long problem with capacitor failures.

This is a bummer because I just started looking for my first LED TV and I was leaning toward Samsung. Not sure what brand to buy now  :shake:
Any suggestions for around $750.00 - $1000.00 for a 47 to 50 inch'er ?
Don't need 3D or a smart TV, just the basics with a good picture.

Sony used to have a good repudiation.

We just bought a 37 inch Panasonic last weekend (without extended warrantee - I hate those).  Fingers crossed.

You pay extra, unfortunately. But if you get one, I'd recommend the Louisville Slugger.  :thumb:

You know it buddy.

Interesting side note.....The guy that owns the company I work for, was good buddys with Stan Musial.
Every time the owner brought his car in the shop, his trunk always had St. Louis Cardinal paraphernalia rolling around in the truck.
All of it was signed by Stan, including the Louisville slugger bats.

I know it wasn't "very" relevant, but I thought it was cool.

My Samsung plasma has behaved well so far. The only disappointment I've had is my failure to be able to access analog sound from it to my preamp. Since the unit is hanging on the wall behind a heavy credenza with my whole system on it, the matter of getting behind to check connections is an epic undertaking that exceeds my ambition level by an insurmountable margin. I'm in live with it mode. I have everything ( cable box, OPPO, Apple TV) sending sound straight to the pre. The Samsung is a 7000 series Smart TV. The only problem is with TV generated sound like YouTube or Netflix. I can only get that through the TV speakers. Lately I've thought about getting an OPPO 105 to do the Smart Part. Can I run the Netflix picture to the Samsung via HDMI and the sound to my preamp via XLR at the same time?

I own a 50" Samsung 3D Plasma. I have had it for about three years with absolutely no problems.
