Question about ribbon tweeters...
« on: 31 May 2014, 03:59 am »
Hi Jim!

Why are ribbon tweeters always placed in cabinets vertically?  Would there be a difference in sound if the ribbons were placed horizontally?

Ribbon tweeters have wide horizontal dispersion when mounted vertically, but very limited vertical dispersion. If you mounted them horizontally you wouldn't hear much of their output unless you were directly on axis with the driver (requiring severe toe-in) and you could potentially get more unwanted reflections off of the floor and ceiling surfaces. As a result the speaker placement is much more flexible and imaging is better (generally speaking, YMMV) when they are mounted vertically. Hope this helps!

IIRC you can mount them either way, but when mounted horizontally, the vertical dispersion is now much greater than it was and the horizontal dispersion is narrower. Mounted vertical is opposite, that is more horizontal dispertion and less vertical.

Jim can fix this if I'm wrong...and I'm two minutes late....
