The HEED Obelisk PM monoblock amps won a 2009 Diapason D’or award from French audiophile magazine Diapason. The music from the Obelisks is very detailed while remaining nuanced, smooth, and musical with terrific PRAT (pace, rhythm, and timing) and a deep, wide soundstage.
The HEEDs are the best solid-state amplifiers I have heard in my system. They are very highly regarded in Europe while not well known in the U.S. They use an innovative capacitor-coupled design with exceptionally high quality parts including Mundorf capacitors and a toroidal power supply custom built for HEED. The amps are based on a Richard Hay design updated by HEED’s owner/engineer and hand-built in Hungary.
I am the original owner and purchased the amps through an authorized dealer for the U.S. distributor for HEED, Profundo Audio. I have been extremely happy with these for the last 2½ years, and I am only selling to upgrade to significantly more expensive battery powered tube amps.
Due to the circuit design, the Obelisks’ 70W per channel are more akin to tube watts than to solid state in their ability to easily drive even difficult speaker loads: they provide a stable 200W into 1Ω.
The Obelisks run cool and as a benefit of their design do not hog a lot of space. They are as compact as the Wyred4Sound monoblock amps that they replaced in my system, but the Obelisks sound significantly better in my direct comparison. For the price of a new pair of Wyred4Sound monoblocks you could have a much better pair without the bleaching of tone of class D amps.
If you are looking for a new amp near this price, it will be hard to come across a pair of highly refined monoblocks that is this good.
