Steve, or anyone else.....what do your mods do that might improve the phillips? Why exactly is the sony better as a transport??
As I say in my other posts, I believe it is the DSP in the Sony, the transformerless digital out that I redesign and the Jensen 4-pole cap.
However, I am making real inroads with the Philips now. With the 4-pole Jensen cap installed and broken-in and a lot of digital and power mods, my prototype is now an excellent transport. You should read my article in PFOnline to understand what makes a great transport and cable length issues:
http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue14/spdif.htmIf you intend to use the Philips as a transport, there are a number of things that I can do to improve this:
1) redesign the S/PDIF output to speed-up the edge-rates
2) match the output impedance to exactly 75 ohms
3) improve the power delivery to the digital circuits
4) improve the power supply - 4-pole Jensen cap and Black Gates
5) Install a modded 33 MHz Superclock2 module
6) isolate the S/PDIF output with a high-performance pulse transformer
I have not priced these mods yet, but they will be in the $650-$750 range including the Jensen cap. The modded Superclock2 is $450 installed.
We should really take this discussion to the Empirical Audio forum. Sounding too commercial now.
