Subject: BDP-1 Firmware update

Hi James,

Both of these units are amazing pieces of kit.  This is the 1st time I've heard digital sound as good/better than my Michell Orbe turntable.

I am looking for a Bryston pre/power combination next as I think the synergy between these products will really lift my listening experience to another level.

Incredibly pleased by this wonderful supremely musical player/DAC combo. These 2 products have really made me sit up & listen to music again!

Cheers

James,

I would like to thank you and Bryston for the great products and support.

I recently purchased a used BDP-1 and BDA-1 to add to my 4BSST and BP6. Every time I add a Bryston product the sound quality keeps on improving.

I have been listening to 24/192 material, and hearing new detail in songs I have been listening to for 40 years. The firmware update when through without any issues. The Max2 software is a major improvement from the SO.94 2010-11-14 revision.

Thanks

Bda-1 continues to amaze. Hooked up my ancient adcom gcd575 (vintage 1988) to it and am stunned. Nice thing is the adcom has absolute polarity switch that is sometimes helpful. Also have a mac mini coming in via optical.

Btw, I am using the balanced outputs.

Hi James,

I'm still VERY much enjoying this amazing player & it's companion, the BDA-1.

I never thought I would be listening to digital music as much/more than I listen to analogue!

Cheers

Hi,

I just wanted to say that of all the components I’ve owned, switching to Bryston (a BDA-1 and a B60R) was one of the best audio decisions I’ve made.

A long time ago a friend raved about his 4B, but it took me awhile to try everything; I’ve had everything including Classe,  McIntosh, Musical Fidelity, PS Audio, Pioneer Elite,  niche tube gear, consumer gear, and even classics like Fisher.  He was right; once I got the Bryston’s with some decent cabling my search was over…except for eventually trading up to the new B135, I suppose.

I guess my friend was right all along!

Thanks!

Bryston BDP-1

Chris and Bryston,

The BDP sounds absolutely fantastic.

I thought that I needed to setup a 2 channel preamp (with passthrough) for my critical 2 channel listening. As much as I love my Esoteric CD player, the BDP-1 solved the slightly  thin mid-range, provided added texture, depth, and warmth; all without sacrificing anything.

Several weekends ago I listened to the BP26 with the separate BDA and while it solved some of my "problems" I felt that it sacrificed the soundstage.

But the BDP performed its magic without sacrificing air, detail, or soundstage.

Very nice.

Hi James and Mike,

The BDP-1 works beautifully. Plug and play, literally. Never had it easier. Using my iPad with Bryston-Max, and ethernet transceivers plugged into wall outlet.

For settings adjustments, I need a username and password. Please provide.  Serial #000890.

One drawback: this may make my CD collection somewhat moot!!!

Keep up the great work.

Pete

(And thanks for the free music on that USB. I was expecting a free t-shirt, but this is classier!).

Not at all, it's makes it better.  Rip the CDs and the resulting digital library, with it's ease of use , will make the CDs more relevant.

Hi Folks,

The INNER EAR is doing a review on the BDP/BDA combination.

Here is what he emailed me this morning:

Hi James,

Got the BDA-1 and BDP-1 digital playback system up and running this weekend. My thoughts so far: I think it sounds more analogue than some TTs which I find strange.

There is less of the digital glare, one finds in even very high-end players. Going to change the interconnects today and listen carefully again.

Anyway the unit(s) live up to the highest of expectations and the most critical ears in the audio business.

Christmas has arrived early this year, :hyper:

A couple of day ago Santa came round to my house and delivered a neat BDP/BDA/BHA package, supplemented with a Senn HD800 and some up market interconnects. Have added them to my setup and have been glued to the cans ever since.

Have read a lot on burning in the equipment, but right out of the box this gear sounds just wonderful. Have been able to compare CD’s in my BCD (quite lovely) to the ripped versions from the BDP/BDA combo (so much better). The most striking difference is the sense of space and ambiance oozing from the digital player. A lot of the credit must go to the BHA however. Combined with the Senn (unbalanced so far) the sound is mesmerizing and on more than one occasion has made my hair stand up. After all we are all in it for the music and the way Ella’s voice and feelings are conveyed by this piece of Bryston magic (Intimate Ella; just about the best CD I own) is truly unbelievable.

So far I have mostly listened to CD rips, but I am now starting my journey into the fields of High Res music. Just wish the main stream music publishers would accompany their releases by the FLAC masters.

Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob

Glad you are enjoying the gear.

Your comment regarding the sense of space and ambiance is a very important observation. These signals are very low level and the noise floor and lack of distortion needed to extract these extremely low level signals is what sets the BDP and BDA apart    :thumb:

Hi James,

Just wanted to add that it takes the awesome BHA to really appreciate the difference between the BCD and BDP/BDA. The difference is much less evident when I listen to my speakers (Focal Profile). Have heard rumors that a sample of your speakers is traveling our way shortly. Think my present speakers do not do my B100 (and upstream source) justice. Have decided on keeping the B100 (connected by RCA to the DAC) because I feel that upgrading the speakers will give me a greater improvement, and greater convenience, than adding the B4SST2. When trying out the BHA/B4SST2 combo, very nice indeed, it was a slight inconvenience that there is no mute on the poweramp, so you have to power it down when listening to headphones. One day I might consider the B135 to replace the B100.

Cheers,
Bob

Do you have the headphone amp feed from the RCA left and right 'tape out' on the B100?

Hi James

Yes, BDA is directly connected by a balanced XLR cable to the BHA and by a RCA cable to the B100.
For now I have also connected the BHA to the "tape out" of the B100 using a RCA cable.

Have connected my Squeezebox (for Spotify) to the BDA using S/PDIF.
When my other new (and much better) digital cable arrives, I will also run the BCD through the BDA using S/PDIF.
Then all I need is the balanced connection between the BDA and the BHA, where the BDA will more or less be the hub of the system.
The B100 will obviously hang on to the RCA interlink from the BDA.

Would be interesting comparing the BCD and BDP in this setting, could be more on equal terms, will see.

Cheers,
Bob
