Ripping files question...
« on: 11 Feb 2014, 03:01 am »
Hello All,
I just finished reading all 33 pages of the Q&A thread but this question below was not answered so I thought I'd re post it here...

I am about to start ripping my first CDs into Flac. I read a bunch of threads on how to do this, I am going to use DBpoweramp...and an unknown powered hard drive as yet...I sent my windows 7 laptop off to a friend to clean it up and make it ready for turning the machine into basically a machine for my music room, ripping files, use for my remote control  program and light internet use for updates and music downloads etc... . He expressed to me that it may be slow for what I plan to do. I have a one year old HP laptop with a   i3 processor and 4G ram, he recommended at least, getting an 8G ram. Those of you ripping, will this be enough? or will I need to buy a new machine that's faster...I hope to be a BDP and BDA owner this spring. I am trying to get all the files on the Hard drive so that when the BDA/BDPcome in, I can just plug and play...thanks for your replies, Pete

It's plenty fast enough for ripping.

If you find the interface lagging (taking too long to load, respond, etc), you can replace the hard drive with a solid state hard drive for a dramatic improvement. However, this won't improve ripping speed or anything related to playing music files.

I'd try using it as it stands. If you find a shortcoming with it, post what it is and maybe try to fix it then.

Your machine is more than powerful enough for ripping. In fact, it's powerful enough for most music related tasks.

Of course, there's always more/faster/better, but I'd start with what you have and see if you find it lacking in any particular way and upgrade accordingly - if at all.

Ok thanks for the reassurance!!  I get the machine back today. The first order of business is to add dbpoweramp and DVD audio extractor to the slicked computer and I should be ready to rip. I will use a powered external drive yet to be determined. Thanks  Pete

+1 for the computing power.

I use Apple products and have used Windows 7 in the past but I can't remember how a key setting works on Windows7 or maybe DBpoweramp.  One setting that improves quality of the file transfer from the CD to the HDD has to do with the way the computer handles a bit/byte that it can't read.  Apple iTunes has a check box that forces iTunes to re-read it until it gets it correct, no interpolation of the source material bits.  It makes the importing take 50% longer but you are sure to get exactly what's on the disk onto your computer HDD.

I am sure there is some setting on your software - it's worth the extra time.
