Two heads are better than one
« on: 12 Jan 2014, 08:02 pm »
This has been beaten to death but here's another.
We all know how important speaker placement is with these things so today I had some free time and dragged my wife out to be my set of ears.
I put on some familiar music (Let It Be), had her sit on the couch and started with the speakers right next to each other and kept moving them apart until she said When.
I then adjusted the toe-in until she said When.
Then it was forward and backwards until she said When.
Where I ended up with them is quite a bit different than where I had them but you know what?  She did good!
Very coherent soundstage and lots of bass but not too much.  For this particular room and set up, we ended up about 45" out from the picture window.
This was quite a bit further back and apart than I had them and a LOT more toe-in.  Shows what I know!
Pics or it didn't happen so...

Great idea. How did you coerce her to do that?

If it was my room I would try them that wide but moved more forward, as far as possible, like 6' more. The soundstage would be mind blowing.

I'll mark the spots and fool around some more.
I just asked her if she could help me out.
At first she didn't like the idea but I told her it wasn't a test, I'll just drag the stuff around and you tell me where it sounds good to you.
Her hearing is better than mine is, I'm sure.
That's because she's younger!  I only here that about 50 times a month...

A younger women eh, nice going. Mine is older, but not a cougar.

It pays to try weird radical positioning in my books. I always shoot for as much space behind the speakers and as wide as possible. Your soundstage should double in size. If you haven't experienced this hold on to your brain cells.

Why is there an SG lying in the middle of the floor?

On this we are in complete agreement!

Oh wait, you're talking about speakers....
