I need a reasonably priced CD player or CD transport to purchase (around $3000).  Any recommendations?

A used Bryston BCD-1.  They don't make them anymore but it was one of the finest produced at any price point.  You should be able to pick one up on Audiogon or Cannuckaudiomart for well under $2,000.  I own one and love it and I want to say it was $2,500 to $3,000 new.

Good Luck,
Mike

I second the recommendation for the BCD-1.  I can't think of a better CD-player and you can connect it to a DAC  with a variety of cables or use it's analog output.  Besides, you can control everything with the Bryston remote.  It will even shuffle tracks for you.

I bought a demo that was slightly used for $2K.

Totally agree! BCD-1 is my main player. I have yet to cross into the BDP-# world yet

I totally agree about the Bryston BCD-1, it's an amazing CD player!   :thumb:

Even though I've invested in a Bryston BDP-2/BDA-2 combo, I kept my Bryston BCD-1 as backup and for those days when I just want to pop-in a CD and listen.

If you can't find a used Bryston BCD-1, have a look at the all-new Rega Saturn-R CD player (it also has a built-in DAC, if you need that...):

The BCD-1 WAS my main player, then I hesitantly crossed over to the BDP-2-BDA-2 side.
It took me quite awhile to decide to go to the other side, but when I did what a major difference convenience wise.
1:No hunting thru 540 cds for one particular song or cd
2:play any song with a click of the mouse
3:make up playlists in any combination with album art
4:can change songs up or downstairs from main computer or laptop(I can be anywhere in the house)
I'm sure there are more, just can't think of them right now
5:It's just as good as the BCD-1 audio wise if not better,if it was not as good I would never have sold my BCD-1
I don't miss the hard labour of disc spinnin no mo,were talkin freedom here :thumb:.

I have a mint BCD-1 that I rarely use.  I'd sell it but I need the remote that came with it.

I have had a BDC 1 for a few years now and enjoyed it immensely.
For the money, I have not heard another player that I am envious enough of to make me want to sell it.

The only issue I have with it is a strong susceptibility to static charge. When its dry in the winter like now, and I do not discharge myself
to a nearby metal ground before I touch any part of my rack or components, the resulting spark will send the player into a tizzy.
The resulting distorted sound that comes through the speakers will scare the crap out of you !!
The only way to stop it is to shut off the unit and restart it, then all is fine.

Anyone else have this problem ??   Greg

Greg,

I keep an open pack of laundry fabric softener sheets near my rig. A quick tap of the finger and I have never shocked the gear like I used to do all the time before. Scary when the old VAC pre would POP and cut out for a few seconds as I waited for it to please please please come back on!

Thanks Mike I will try that. Now I have an insulated wire from a water pipe tied to my rack near the cd player. I touch the uninsulated end of the wire and even then the resulting spark sometimes trips the cd player into this behavior.

Let's assume for a moment that the purchaser isn't interested in buying used. Since the BCD is no longer available new, it there another player in the same league?

I think Teak's Esoteric has a great redbook player still :peek:

They do indeed. The new TEAC stuff is great value and worth looking into. A lot of them also do SACD and more. The Esoteric units are superb but even the entry-level K-07 might be a bit beyond what the OP was budgeting for. I would have reservations about buying a used CD player...

As an aside, I like to think that one magical day I will read a thread about CD players where someone doesn't come along and start talking about how they moved away from CD players to whatever alternative they decided to move to, hijacking the thread. And on that day, I will know that I have indeed seen the elephant and can leave the circus and head on home. Of course, it seems that day will never come but in the words of Dr. King: "Keep hope alive."

Still at the circus,
D.D.

PS : Dig spinner's new avatar! Very nice!  :thumb:

+1 how ever you said. :thumb:
Esoteric was my first choice as well but at the last minute I fell in love with Accuphase.

I do not buy stuff by what reviewers said. actually, I should say I never did.
But, if I was in the market today to buy a cd player at the reasonable price, I would take this Copland at $6500 and I would not look back.
