I have never used the 45 rpm setting on my WTA.  I was reading Stereophile this morning and Art Dudley was talking about 45 rpm direct mail EP's being released by old favourite Marshall Crenshaw - 3 x 3 song ep's each year by subscription.  Another cool marketing idea and was thinking I would enjoy these. 

But have never used this setting and not sure I remember even how to do it.  May need to dig out my manual.  Any problem with the thread and changing between 33 and 45.  Any other experiences?  Thanks ... before I leap.

No problem here. Just don't stretch the thread any further than absolutely necessary to get it on the larger pulley.  Just in case, keep plenty of extra "belts" on hand.

Just be careful as mick suggests. Because of the number of belts that have broken without even switching to 45 rpm, I tend not to play at 45 rpm very often. Then again, I have little more than a handful of 45 rpm LPs and singles.
The good news: My current belt has lasted for about 4 months now! Maybe it's time to listen to some 45s, eh?

I just push the string up or down with the handle of a stylus brush while the platter is spinning to change speeds.

I'm still on my first thread as well - pretty close to 3 years in.  I'm not sure I could find my backup but good to hear playing 45 rpm doesn't seem to have adverse impact on the thread.  Thanks for the feedback - anyone have a 45 rpm record that is their go to and on the table on a regular basis or is 45 rpm more of a novelty thing?

Truly amazing.  I've had three Amadeus and could only get about 3 WEEKS out of each belt on avg.  I'm talking factory belts, Pranka belts, and my own belts.  I only ran them about 5 hrs a week too and never dared switching to 45 rpm.

But I guess this goes to show it really is down to the quality of each belt, as Pranka told me, rather than user behavior or some other issue related to the table itself.

I  am still using the original belt with my first-generation WTT and it still works fine with 45 or 33.

I stop the motor and platter and use a (clean) cotton tip.
But no matter how carefully done, I always get the feeling the thread is being stressed beyond snap. AND if you've settled your 33/1.3 rpm, 45 will spin too fast. So listening to 45's is always less an urge than a wilfully considered option... also you have to clean your mat after 7"s and 10"s because of fingers placing and removing the records.
It's a good thing the Amadeus sounds so damn good. I still prefer MK 1 looks and options, though.
