Sonic Impact T-amp as headphone amp?

Is there a way to use headphones with the Sonic Impact T-amp?  The word is that common ground speakers (as in headphones) will destroy it.

Yes you can use SI to drive headphones, but you cannot have common ground.  This means you have to modify your headphone cables to split the L and R ground wires that are currently both connected to the ground pin of 1/4" headphone jack, which you may or may not want to do if your headphones are expensive.

If you have "normal" headphones like Grado's or Senn's, you don't 'need' SI's power, and you might want to just get a low-power headphone amp.

If you already have the SI amp, you can certainly try it, but once again, with "normal"  'phones you do want to add a power resistor in SERIES to prevent blowing up your headphones accidentally.

You also probably want to add a power resistor in PARALLEL to speaker + and - terminals to bring down SI's treble response, which will rise a bit for higher impedance load like headphones.  For example, for AKG k1000 (120 Ohms), a 4 to 8 Ohm resistor works well.

Jon & Vinnie,

If I am to upgrade from DT831 to AKG K1000, and I have a pair of ClariT monoblocks, should I get a pair of, say, 6 ohm resistors and connect in parallel at the speakre binding posts?

Thanks.

Look on head-fi. Some have tried to use the Sonic Impact with the K1000, with limited success.

Hi Paul,

Yes, I recommend using 6 ohm resistors (they were 5W matched resistors) across the output terminals of the Clari-T when using AKG K1000s.  I've tried this combo in the past and the results were very good.

Thanks CSMR for your response.  However, I am sure the ClariT, whether in stereo or monoblock configuration, is much different from the stock SI amp.  Especially so after they are upgraded with Black Gate and Auricaps.

I have little idea. They had explanation there of the difficulties and proposed changes, but I am not technically competent to understand these issues.

CSMR, don't worry.  I am not technical either and don't really care about specs.  I have tried and been so happy about the battery powered T amps and Slim Devides SB2 that perform better than anything I have heard.
