Selling gear in the St. Louis area
« on: 25 Jan 2014, 03:11 pm »
Hello. This is my first post, but I've lurked on the Audiocircle site for a while. I've accumulated some gear over the years that I would like to begin selling and am looking for advice on the best way to do it. I thought I'd ask the local group, since I am located outside St. Louis, in wine country. I don't have much experience selling used equipment, so I'm wondering if the local Craigslist is a good option, or should I be looking at Audiogon or the Trading Post on this site. I'm looking to sell mostly mid-priced, good quality gear, i.e.  pair of Hafler 9130 amplifiers (one was modded by Musical Concepts), Hafler 915 pre, Epos ES11 speakers, and a couple other items. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott F.

Hey Pan, welcome aboard  :thumb:

I'd suggest posting it here at AC first. It's free and you've got a targeted audience. GAS has a fleamarket thread where the local guys sell their gear.

In turn, do a cross thread in the appropriate AC Trading Post thread (they are subdivided by amps, sources, etc)

The local Craigslist is a wasteland of low end gear. On occasion a decent piece pops up but mostly it's dominated by car stereo and old Sound Design (type) stuff. It's probably still worthy of posting it on CL but I wouldn't expect much response unless it's people trying to buy it for 50% what its worth.

AGon and eBay are OK but you've got the fees and what I call the "needy" buyers to deal with. Both of those sites are a minefield because of the buyers IMO.

Anyway, good luck selling your gear. Hopefully you can find somebody local that will give you close to your asking price  :thumb:

Thanks for the advice, Scott. I think I'll try a couple different approaches and see if I have any luck.

I've a couple e-mail inquiries on the EPOS speakers, as well as a pair of Magnepan MMG's, so I'm going to hold off on posting more info on them for the moment. I'm also looking to sell:

1 Hafler 9180 amplifier. 105 wats/channel. Silver rackmount faceplate. Modified by Musical Concepts - $500
1 Hafler 9180 amplifier. Black standard faceplate. $250
1 Hafler 915 preamp. Black standard faceplate. $150.

Also the following  that I'd like to sell, but don't really have a price in mind
NAD 5000 CD player
NAD Tuner
Older B&O turntable

A couple DIY type items I'd also be open to selling:
Audio Nirvana Super 12 Cast Frame drivers - $250 for the pair
Fostex FE206e drivers - $50 for the pair
