I wish I'd spent the extra to buy the base from Chris when I had the chance. My project is going nowhere :-(

Hi John,

With the aussie $$ having a bit of a resurgence would it be too expensive to have a base shipped over from the states?

it looks like you're ready to spin! Why not give it a whirl just the way it sits? Who needs tung oil, anyway!

What part are you having difficulties with?

Oh, I don't have that base anymore :-( :-( Left it behind when I moved from the US. Not sure why, it was a pretty stressful time.

Need to try again. Maybe I will go breadboard shopping next weekend

Hi John
Why don't you purchase another base from Teres, without the lead shot.
You can then fill it yourself. It will save a bit in postage. I enquired at a gunshop. You can buy lead shot for about $30 for a 10 kilo tin. I had a look at the rosewood base. It does look incredible, and appears the best value for money.

Very good idea from Malcolm.   I bought the unfilled platter from Chris with the intentions of having it filled later.  There is a shop here in the city that does laser work on acrylics and such and it was relatively inexpensive.  I have a bunch of shot.  It is certainly better than shipping a 40lb platter or umpteen hundred pound base overseas.

Josh:
Did you have a blank acrylic platter machined? I'm in NYC and am interested.

No I didn't have it machined, I bought it from Chris, along with the motor and bearing.  I built the base myself, which wasn't that difficult really, and certainly a lot of fun.

Right now, the motor is driving me nutz!  It is so finicky and constantly loses its lock on speed part way through a side.  I have already had to sent it in to get fixed once.   I am going to do a little more tweaking when I move and get the battery option, if that doesn't improve on stability and ease of play then I am going to sell the motor and get some other type of motor, such as a Galibier motor.

Josh,

Make sure that the IR sensor is set exactly to the height specified by the supplied jig. A fraction of a millimeter too high will cause the symptoms you are having.

I chose not to superglue my sensor in place, so a bit of slippage is common. I began to have the same thing happen to me. After resetting the sensor, the problem cleared itself up.

Hey JohnR!!!

Check this out Teres Scratch and Dent Sale

Chris is selling Acrylic Bases for $50.00 US.!!! That might even make it worth it to ship down under.

Cheers,
Wayne

Yeah, that's the email I received last night as well. Guess it's time to fire up the jointer and build one.

My thoughts exactly, get some jatoba & cocobolo, joint, plane, cut and epoxy the pieces together!   Get some good dust protection as cocobolo can be a bit tough on the sinuses.

My wife bought me a fancy new respirator for my birthday, so I'm set. :)

OH man,
I would have loved to jump in on that 50.00 base..I started a platter a year ago but still need a base of some sort. FYI, I found when machining acrylic, not only is a respirator a valuable tool but a restaurant dishwashers plastic apron is nice to keep the junk out of your clothes and therefore skin.
