P-man's DIY Audio Rack

I a started the rack for a 2nd system.
4 shelves are cut to size and the orange paint was flying everywhere.   :thumb:

Finally adding the last pieces. Hopefully I'll complete it by tomorrow evening.

Now come on you knew there was gonna be some orange somewhere now didn't ya.

The rack is 39" high
Spacing - The bottom shelf is 12" and 9" between the other 2
The shelves were cut 21" wide by 19" deep.
I had Home Depot do all the rough cuts so I came home with 8-2'x2' pieces.
These were glued and cut then to size using a straight edge clamp and circular saw.
The legs are 1x3 and 1x2 poplar joined with biscuits and glue.

I bought a cheap biscuit from Harbor Freight.

http://www.harborfreight.com/4-plate-joiner-68987.html

You can never get the glued edge straight so I ran the glue joint thru the table saw.
This way you can't see it wasn't exact and looks great. (at least to me)
I used pre-finished 3/4" oak quarter round between the shelves. This way all the weight
is carried down to the floor. So that the #14 x 3" brass screws are not the sole support
of the weight on each shelf.

Orange ,   really   , I'd never have guessed. Looks good, not to mention it's keeping you out of the cold & DD's. A nice C&C weekend project.  :thumb:

Very nice, P-Man... are you going to "spike" the rack?

Very nice P-Man!

What material did you use for the shelves?

I had Home Depot take a sheet of 3/4" MDF and cut into 8 - 2"x 2" pieces. Then I glued them together to  make 1 1/2" thick shelves.

P-Man,

The finished rack looks great.
I had thought of doing the same thing for shelves with maybe some kind of a "Dynamat" between them as a constraint layer.

Let us know how it sounds...or ah how it doesn't sound,

As an old fart audiophile (have never seen the point in going wild with accessories) and being half color blind (so won't judge on color, but love being individualistic) I really like your rack - nicely built, inexpensive, and functional.   :thumb:

Wheels are just so practical versus scrapping the floor or contorting to awkwardly make equipment connections.  (I went with a $30 Ikea nightstand, just wide enough for 17 inch gear with thick top and bottom shelves and adjustable thinner shelf between.  Stayed 'purist' and mounted the wheel posts to use as spikes but didn't put the wheels on.  I 'cheated' and bought two to get a 2nd adjustable shelf and gain a side table.)
