A/V-3 cabinet question
« on: 11 Feb 2014, 01:34 am »
Hi everyone,

I have recently ordered an A/V-3 kit and I'm currently planning the cabinet's construction. I have read the plans given by Danny on GR-Research's website and I have understood entirely except for a small detail :

Is there anything thing underneath brace H? It says "bottom" on the plan, but I'm not sure if it's a space between brace H and the base or if it's another layer of 3/4" MDF? Is there anything special about brace H or is it just there to make the bottom side twice as thick?

Thank you all in advance and I can't wait to get started on these!!

Welcome to AC.

Panel H adds another layer to the bottom so you have plenty of meat there to screw the base to.

I just received my kit! Can't wait to build the cabinets... but I have a question about the wiring :

I will use 14 gauge wires to connect my amplifier to my speakers, should I use the same gauge of wire inside the speakers or will the wire that came with the kit do?
And I was thinking that I should immobilize the crossover boards on the braces or is it ok if they just sit there?

Thank you!

Use the wire that came in the kit. It is some of the best wire available.

You can mount the crossover to the braces or on the back wall behind the lower woofer. The later is easier.

Should I use it instead of the speaker wire to connect my speakers to my amp?

Never mind, I hadn't realized it was a solid wire...

Hi Danny, me again!

I was looking through the components that came with my kit, and I was wondering if it's normal that I seem to have too much white and red wires.
Also, what's the use of the other length of wire (similar to the leads coming out of the resistors and capacitors)?

Thank you!

Better too much than not enough! Voice of experience from someone who always seems a little short on wire.
I think the other "wire" you're referring too might be solder, which Danny always includes in kits.

If the crossover is mounted lower in the cabinet then you might need the extra wire lengths. Once you start running it all out it goes quickly.

And as Peter pointed out, that Silver wire is the solder you'll need to put it all together with.

Another thing. Should I use flux with the solder you included with the kit? I have solder with flux in it at home, should I use it instead?

Thank you again for everything Danny!

Just use the supplied solder. No need for additional flux.
