My Snells
« on: 7 Oct 2013, 04:10 am »
Been cleaning up and trying to make space. Was finally able to bring these in from the garage. Bought them about a year ago and was only able to test them for working drivers. Did sound good for all of thirty minutes. They can be bi-amped and have a rear firing tweeter. Grills and badges are present.

Hey I had a pair of these a few years back. Great speakers, they flew under the radar. For the sound quality and beautiful grills, just a gem of a speaker.

Snells are great speakers. Very well made. They just had so many competitors and weren't as widely distributed as others. I think they got bought out or were traded to a couple of different parent companies along the way too. Definitely flew under the radar unless you were a bit of a Snell fan and/or were willing to seek them out.

I saw the Snells as they were being brought out. Recognised the name and the metal grills caught my eye All the drivers were intact. Looked in back and saw the controls and bi-amping and country of origin. Gave them the weight test. Price was right so I loaded them up. I think "flying under the radar," is, in general, a product of inattention that can benefit a lot of us. The ability to judge quality is a valuable insight. I started this "hobby" about seven years ago. Read about all the big finds at thrifts and one day decided to go out and see. The second one I went to I spotted the knobs of a silver faced stereo in the middle of the receiving area. Long story short, I took a look and waited while it was priced and "set out." I was amazed at the weight when I finally touched it. I had no idea what it was,  my first Pioneer SX-1250.

Peter Snell was a very innovative designer who went too soon.
His Type A speakers are considered treasures to vintage collectors.
Snell hired Kevin Voecks to produce the series prior to the one you have now.
Voecks then moved on to become director of product development at Revel Loudspeakers.
Snell was acquired by Boston Acoustic and after about 5 years was phased out!

You got a great deal on a pair of speakers with a true audiophile lineage!  8)
Enjoy   :D

Thanks for the history lesson. I've seen pictures of the "A"s and these are already more than big. Looking forward to the sound.
