Tweaks . .
« on: 11 Sep 2013, 04:49 pm »
I didn't know where to put this for what is about to be a question, but, when you think about it, many of us are tweaking some kind of way.  Especially analog enthusiasts I dare day.  Anybody use a Zerostat to neutralize static electricity?  The kind that is brought to bear by removing an LP from its sleeve?   I remember reading way back that when pulling the trigger, if you hear a click, you should start over.  I haven't used one in years, but decided to buy one and it clicks incessantly.  Is this a legit concern, the clicking bit, or a needless one?  By the way, the price has risen 4 times from when I last owned one.  Geez!  I also use a carbon fiber brush and am wondering if I needlessly purchased this, to boot.  Thank you for any replies in advance.

Hi Jim,

I have my original Zerostat from the 80s-90s but no instructions. I also remember reading it should not click but that’s about impossible to do unless I pull the trigger extremely slow. Maybe meditation first would help . I remember reading that it should be used in 3 spots on an LP about 1 inch away. The first two spots the trigger should be pulled and released, the 3rd spot it should be pulled but released away from the album. At no time should it click, at least that’s what I remember reading.

I just started using my Zerostat after it sat ideal for approx 20 years, wish I still had the instructions. I like to think it removes static but I’m not really sure if it does. Seems like there should be a way to test the album before and after usage. Maybe holding a tissue or something close to the album before and after usage may tell if the tissue is draw into the LP.  :dunno:

I don't know what the instructions for the latest Zerostat say, but I do know the old one is not supposed to click. If it clicks, that means you are squeezing it too fast. ( that's what she said.)

Sorry, couldn't help it.

The sound you should hear from the old zerostat is a hissing sound, with no clicks. It takes a little bit of practice to squeeze the trigger at a slow consistent speed. Just keep at it and you will get the hang of it. I think it should really be about a 4 to 5 second squeeze, and then hold it there for another 5 or 10 before you release at the same slow, consistent speed. Hold again for 5 to 10 before slowly pulling away.

Again, a hissing sound should come out of it, like it is leaking air (which of course, it is not).

Gonna catch a lot of flack for this one.

I would suggest your LPs must have intrinsic static ... as I have never created static by removing an LP from its sleeve.  But then my LPs have always first been wet/vac cleaned - which results in them having no residual static.

So I have to ask - do you live in a desert (with zero humidity in the air)?  Do you use a wet cleaning method on your LPs?

Yes, I wet clean the with a Spin Clean apparatus and slow dry.  And, no, I live in an area with humidity on the high side.  Advice?

Then you shouldn't have your static problem!  :o  Is your listening room carpeted (wool carpet - which I have - doesn't generally produce a problem but nylon/nylon mix will)?

If your answer is 'no' / 'wool' then maybe a Zerostat is the solution to your problem.  Or, use another Milty product before you use the Pin Clean - 'Permastat'.  That certainly kills static - for ever.

Andy

I have found IMO a better solution to LP static. The grounded brush from Mapleshade and Acoustic sound works wonders. Own a Zerostat, have wool carpet, yet somehow static is present at times, go figure. Another static buster for ones self is a washer connected to a wire then runned to ground. Just touch the washer before your TT or LP.
If your anal buy a matt with ground wire to stand on by your rack. Edmund Scientific  may have them.
