Sorting Out Omega Subs
« on: 31 Jan 2014, 07:38 pm »
Hi All,

I have a pair of Super 6 Alnico floorstanders that I love. I have found that for me, and in my space, I like them best with the bottom firing ports blocked. I feel that they image better and sound clearer. The tradeoff is that the bottom end drops off a bit. With that in mind I am considering a pair of subs. Over the past year I have been following Louis's exploration in this area however I have to admit to now being a bit confused regarding what is currently available, what it costs, and what might work best for my situation.

Basically I would like to hear what is below 30hz, for it to be tight and fast, but without calling attention to itself beyond what the actual music calls for.

So... Louis. What models are you currently still making, what is the cost, and what would you recommend? Also what is the difference between the idea of a "bass enhancer" as compared to a subwoofer?

Thanks!

Paul

Hi !

I have recent experience with the Super7  and the 3XRS + Speed12....

You will love the Speed12.  The Speed fills in the blanks. The Speed12 picks up where my 3XRS leaves off.  (Not sure..Is a sealed Super6 be similar to a 3XRS ??)  I have found the Speed12 blends nicely and is lucid.  The Speed12 can be distracting @ 1st  The sound stage expands too.

I hate to say this but the SUPER7 is no match for the 3XRS + SPEED12.  (Sorry Louis... It's true)

Thanks Dwight for the input and the bump. Hopefully Louis is swamped with orders and will check in after a while. I am not in a rush.

The Speed12 looks great but might be a bit tight in my space as I cannot do center placement. I will probably opt for a pair of the smaller deepOmega Microns

Hey doggie
What kind of system do you have? Strength and weaknesses in your opinion
Anyone, how and when would you use a speed12 vs sub(s).
Can both/neither be placed in a corner?

Also interested in "Sorting out the subs" one sub listed on the website, but no information yet is the deepOMEGA DUO. I have Super 3XRS's and am very happy with them. I have been using a borrowed sub with them recently and would like to get my own that is a better match. The Speed 12 looks amazing, but seems to be far too large. I am far more interested in something smaller like the deepOMEGA MICRON but have been holding out to see more info on what the  DUO will be like as it might be the happy medium!

Hi doggie,

Many thanks for your post and great to hear about the XRS's in sealed mode. Sorry about the late post.

Bass does drop off this way and at the moment the bass components are the Micron and the Speed12. I will be introducing the dual Micron version as soon as I can. This sub will have the bipole arrangement with 2 8" drivers. One will be front firing and the other rear. 2 subs is always recommended and will sound the best regardless of which model you choose.

The Speed12 is big, but they are the fastest and have the impact. Thanks Dwight and I'm sure yours is pretty broken in now.

I will be doing a lot of updates soon on the site, but the forum will be first.

Thanks,
Louis
