Rogue Cronus Magnum integrated amp in mint condition, winner of The Absolute Sound’s 2010 Integrated Amplifier of the Year award. This is the current production version that uses the superb-sounding Tung-Sol KT120 power tubes.
The amp is a true 9/10 cosmetically and electronically. As part of an exploration of tube integrated amps, I recently bought this amp from an Audiogon member with 100% positive feedback, who himself had put only about 100 hours on the amp. In other words, the amp is close to new. I have been comparing this amp to a twice-as-expensive PrimaLuna pre/power combo, and have decided, after much back-and-forth, to go with the PrimaLuna.
The Cronus Magnum offers classic tube midrange magic (gorgeous vocals!) plus vivid dynamics, 3-D imaging, as well as some great convenience features, including remote control of volume, a built-in headphone amp, and easy tube biasing with the built-in meter. It also comes with a built-in phono preamp, which I haven’t tried as I don’t own a turntable.
Compared to the standard Cronus, the Magnum version offers “a larger and more sophisticated power supply, the addition of polypropylene bypass capacitors, precision Dale-Vishay resistors, gold-plated tube sockets, upgraded input signal tubes, as well as superior binding posts for more solid speaker cable connections.” And, in the current production version (which this amp is), the KT120 power tubes, which, to my ear, are a real delight—powerful, smooth, extended, detailed but not edgy or exaggerated.
According to Rogue designer Mark O’Brien, you can get the most sonic bank for buck by rolling the small signal tubes, in particular the center 12AU7 preamp tube. My favorite preamp tube I tried is a NOS Cifte 12AU7, which I’m including in this sale.
