Orion Loudspeakers with Bryston Amps
« on: 3 Sep 2013, 10:09 pm »
All,
I own a pair of Linkwitz Orions, which I do love. I am looking into an upgrade in amplification and I was considering mixing a couple of Bryston amps.  I have seen a couple threads about mixing ST with SST or SST with SST2 and other variations. The Orions are an active Xover setup that demand 8 channels of amp for stereo music (for the uninitiated). I am considering picking up an old 9B-ST for the four woofers and a 4-channel SST2 for the midrange and tweeters. I have heard nothing but great things about the mids and highs on the SST2 generation I thought this would be a perfect fit. I know the ST and SST2 share gain (23 or 29dB switch) and - I believe - sensitivity.

I am wondering if there is a compelling argument against this mix of ST for 20Hz-120Hz duty and SST2 for 120Hz-20kHz. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Which version of the Orion do you own? I love them with my all SST Brystons.
Just wondering, why do you want to mix match ST,SST and SST2?

I have the Orion + (rear tweeters) right now.  I don't have the floating midrange, and I have not done my ASP upgrade to 3.2.1 just yet.  I love them, but I know the weakest link in my system at the moment are the amps. I do plan to do the ASP upgrade in the future around the time I upgrade to the Seas 10" woofers and go straight to Orion 3.4 or 3.5 (if I have time to build new cabinets).

RE: Mix and match of ST and SST2 -
I have an opportunity for a mint 9B-ST for a good price, but I have heard that the mids, highs and noise floor on the SST2 are all incredible. I don't know that I can justify 2pc 9B-SST2 when I can pick up this ST for the price I can. I was just looking for some feedback or input.  If all ST is the better solution, that is fine as it is also a far more affordable one.
