Ray Dolby RIP....
« on: 12 Sep 2013, 11:56 pm »
I didn't see a post already and this seems the best circle, but I just read an article that Ray Dolby had passed away at age 80.
Like him or the company or technology or not, he did contribute a lot to the audio industry over active years.
Most people don't know it but Ray was also on the team that developed the first commercially feasible video tape machine at
Ampex way back when. Very sharp guy.

Wow, what a loss in the audio world. :(   A true pioneer of eliminating audible nastys that previously had been accepted as normal.
I'm pretty sure the first film ever using his genius was 'A Clockwork Orange'. Gotta love that!

Rest in peace, Mr. Dolby.

Yes, RIP.

Too bad he did not invent Dolby S or C before B, otherwise cassettes might have lived longer.

Sad news.  Ray Dolby was a giant, a true pioneer.  His contributions to our hobby were immense.  He will be missed.

And the nearly unknown Dolby Headphone, a digital cross feed that was among the better examples of this type of application.

I don't think C or S would have saved the cassette for long against the onslaught of the CD. Maybe a jam proof tape. I remember reading reports that studies showed most listeners couldn't tell whether the NR in their decks was on or off. Not everyone listens attentively.
