2.5BSST² or....
« on: 25 Aug 2013, 07:28 pm »
I run my system with four channels, currently using four tube monoblocks but am looking to move to SS.

So... would four x 2.5BSST² (running in bridged mode) be as good as a couple of potentially more expensive Bryston stereo power amps.

Fundamentally looking for the best bang for buck...but also with sound quality in mind (ie is the 2.5BSST² the poor step child or it is comparable to its bigger brothers when run in bridged mode)

I have no ideas on pricing the different Bryston models... so any pointers in this direction would be good.

Thanks,

Peter

I would recommend the 9B SST2 configured in four (or five) channels for your application.  It has a similar power rating as the 2.5B SST2 and will take up significantly less space in your system

Good luck,

Thanks for that...

So two x 3B-SST2 - 150 Watt Stereo Amplifier is $8600 ($4,295.00 each as per audio advisor web sit)e and 9B-SST2 - 150 Watt - Four Channel Amplifier is $6,795.00.. so not too much difference in price.

Question is...which would sound better?

All of Bryston's multi-channel (2 or more) amps are designed such that each channel has it's own dedicated transformer.  With this in mind I would expect that the 9B SST2 would sound very similar to the 3B SST2 although I have not done a direct comparison myself  Maybe James or other Bryston users can provide additional inputs.

Best,
John
