adding a tube pre- bottlehead quickie
« on: 16 Aug 2013, 04:37 pm »
I have a few bottlehead products that i LOVE in my second system, a desktop,  but not my main system:  mac mini-> w4s dac2-> w4s 1000x -> salk speakers. i built a bottlehead quickie ( battery powered tube pre) and added it between the dac2 ( which has been used a pre) and the amps.  But still controlling the volume digitally with the remote on the dac2. Am i essentially using the bottlehead quickie as a tube buffer? I'm just kind of experimenting with all of this out of curiosity. My attitude has always been trying to keep it simple so adding another component is going against what i believe produces the "best" sound. I dont even need a pre because i only have one source.  I am deliberately trying to change or enhance the 100 digital system i have going on. I know my stock bottlehead quickie may not be the most synergistic for my system but i'm just trying to get an idea. When first plugging it in i realize it does change it for sure, i just have to realize if its for the better.

and thoughts, suggestions,  ideas or comments?
thanks!

The quickie is still providing some gain to the signal off the DAC, as apposed to most tube buffers which are passive.
