help getting tape off of album jacket?
« on: 20 Mar 2015, 07:22 pm »
I found in my collection a beat (vinyl) copy of Nazareth's Hair of the Dog.  Looking for replacements, I see they can be spendy. My copy of the jacket is in really good shape--apart from several pieces of tape I must have placed along one split seam (in my stupid youth). :duh: :duh: :duh:

Any help for tricks to remove this tape/residue without damaging the jacket?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

A simple Google search of "adhesive removers" yields numerous results. Among them is Un-do with which I have had considerable experience. It works! Since the tape is undoubtedly dried out, apply liberally, and give it time to soak in before attempting to remove the tape. The "shovel" edge of the applicator should be used to gently lift the tape. Another product, Oops, also might work.

I like Goo Gone. It's basically citric acid. If the jacket is glossy you should be able to get away with wiping it with a googone saturated paper towel...obviously test with different object first.

I just bought some Goo Gone at Wally World, but have not had the opportunity to use it yet. I would use a "test" subject first, or if you can't do that, be at the ready if things start to look like they are going south with the dissolving process.

I have used both ooops and goo gone (not on album jackets) and I think goo gone works much better.  No idea how they would work on album covers.

Hey Mark, why is it dumb to use tape to repair split covers?   I do it all the time.  Is there a better method?

Sunny,

I consider it "dumb" because I used several pieces vertically across the top seam of the album, which were probably nearly invisible 30+ years ago, but not are quite visible, and IMO unsightly.

I have Goo Gone; will give it a trial.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

You could try a heat gun(not to close)it will soften the adhesive.
Then use a razor knife(scraper),it's actually a razor blade in a handle.
We use this method for taking off stickers that are on the side of doors and handrails which are bare wood.
If you just try to scrape them off it does make a mess.
using the heat gun with the razor blade they come off real easy, trick is to push the blade slow under the sticker or tape.
Works excellent and no marks or residue :thumb:.

Yah, but is there an alternative? Some of my old covers are so dried out and split, the records fall out.  A lil tape is the lesser of two evils, IMO.

Just to add that we also use the above method for taking off scotch tape off off walls that have been on there for years,
even the type of tape you use to seal the windows in winter which has dried out over the yrs.
Hope you get it off which ever you try.
