How to secure speakers to speaker stand
« on: 22 Aug 2013, 02:35 pm »
I have a pair of used Totem Model 1 speakers that I bought along with Target stands. The speakers are currently attached to the stands with blue putty.

However, the putty has dried off and doesn't really stick any more. Plus, I have a toddler in the house and am really concerned that the speakers should not accidentally fall on him.

What should I do to secure or stick the speakers to the stands?

P.S. The stands themselves are fairly heavy and stable (sand filled), so my concern is not so much about my toddler toppling the stand itself. I'm mainly concerned that while pulling/tugging/holding the stand, the speakers should not fall on his head.

I have a packet of sticky putty but am not at all sure how well it would work.

Please help!

Thanks,
Arun

I have always used blu tak for this.  I found it lasted at least 2-3 years when left alone.

As for toddlers, those little creatures cannot be trusted!  I have 2 of my own (now verging on 8 and 10), so I know the routine.

I found it important to socialize them with the gear, but keep a sharp eye on them at all times when they are around it.

I would use a gate to fence off your equipment or get different speakers until he's done toddling.   Those are the only solutions that I could live to combine a monitor and a toddler.

Thanks, Mcgsxr and Jon.

I think I will first try out Blu tak as the speakers themselves are fairly light so they should be secure with some sticking power that the blu tac can provide.

Jon, I really don't want to add a fence or a gate for now, but I guess I would have to if there is no other choice (or replace my speakers).

I have also found a product called museum putty that works quite well.  I've got a 3 year old and a 5 year old visiting often, and we live in an earthquake zone... so securing the speakers to the stands is essential.  One uses the museum putty the same way as Blu Tak, and I can verify that it holds quite well, yet when you break the hold you can peel it off the stands or your speakers quite easily, leaving no damage to the finish that I've been able to detect.  Best of luck.

I'd just be very certain that putty holds.  A sharp corner of a heavy speaker hitting a toddlers head could do worse than just leave scars.

At the front of the speakers, something like BlueTack is probably good.  At the back (where a tab sticking out wouldn't look too bad), you might consider using 3M Command Adhesive which is sold with removable wall hooks of various sizes.  The stuff holds very well--way better than BlueTack.  And it does release cleanly without damaging a wall.  I assume it would be the same for a wood veneered surface.

Cheers,  Jim

Here in So Cal we call it 'Earthquake Putty'. Awesome, invaluable stuff. Great suggestion, walkern.  :thumb:

Thanks Jim. That is a great suggestion and I have a few extra adhesive hooks floating around.

Double sided tape for the speakers.
I would be more worried about the whole stand falling unless it weighs 4x the weight of the kid with a low center of gravity.
I have 2 of those energiser bunnies running around.... after futzing around with bookshelves for 3 weeks, I got crazy enough to drill through the carpet and screw the floor standing speakers to the floor. Now they are not going anywhere!
If you dont have wooden floors - think of making some holes in the stand and use some 2" pocket screws to secure them to the floor.

Good luck!

Thanks and wow, I hadn't even thought of drilling them in place!

I finally ended up replacing my mini monitors with floorstanders (Carnegie Acoustics CST1). I do have wooden floors so don't want to drill, and the floorstanders seem to be fairly stable, although I think I will have to secure them even more as my baby becomes stronger. I think I'll add some Command adhesive strips to the back of the speakers (and to the back wall) to be safe.

I was also toying around with the idea of sticking a heavy metal or wooden plate to the speaker base to make it bottom heavy and lower the center of gravity. But not sure if this is a good idea or not. That'll probably be my last resort.

blu tack is the way to go . I use it at home and at the AV store where I work. Play with the blu tack until it becomes soft and very pliable. Roll it into a worm then apply to the top plate of the stand. Press the speaker onto the top of the stand. The blu tack will go cold and lose its malleability and will securely hold the speaker on the stand. If you do this right there is no way that a child is going to pull that speaker off.

blu tack will also hold your towers securely on your wooden flooring, just use a little more of it. I had 30" tall stands with large bookshelf speakers on them as my rear channels. I used blu tack both on the stand to floor connection and the stand to speakers connection. My 20lb cat would jump on and off those speakers and they did not budge.

You can use these stabilizers also.

Thanks a bunch, Electric Bear! I'll try Blue tack the way you suggested.

Chamerci - thanks for that pointer as well. Again, didn't know something like this existed.
