Must choose
« on: 18 Jun 2013, 03:14 pm »
My current amplifier is a Phase Linear 200 Series II driven by a Harman Kardon 725 pre-amplifier.

These feed a nice pair of Celestion SL6S speakers.

I have a choice of the following two amplifiers but am not sure which one to choose:

2B SST2
4B ST

The 2B is a newer generation design but the 4B offers more power for "down the road".

A Bryston BP6 is also available from the same guy selling the 2B.

Any advice is welcome but need to make my mind up in the next few days.

Can you audition them? If so, let your ears be the judge - good luck  :thumb:

Be well...

Allow me to welcome you to our group of Bryston users. Love that handle "BCOMER"...very catchy . Anyway  I can tell you  that my 4B ST (1999) is a fabulous amp. It likes to be connected in balanced mode. I recommend a BP 25 pre if you can get a deal on one. These are units that have great synergy because they are the same generation period . It is said that the newer amps are smoother but you will pay much for their small refinements .  :thumb:

I went to see the 4BST tonight and got it for $1500.00.

There is not a mark on it and he had the original box.

I could not pass up that deal.

Now I need to find a new pre-amplifier and am open to suggestions.

i thought the HK 725 was a pretty good pre, esp for it's time.
If the pre is still functioning well i'd be tempted to add a meaty sub
to that system next, iirc the Celestions were a touch light in deep bass.
JMHO, depends what you listen to a bit.

I would listen to that fine amp for a couple of months so you understand the improvements it made to your sound.  tim92gts is telling us that is a pretty good pre-amp so give it some time.  Then if you still decide you want to upgrade the pre-amp give the type of sound you want some thought.  Do you want to warm it up (McIntosh - tubes) or do want detail and transparency (Bryston) and there are plenty of great ones in between.  Let your ears be the judge.  I always audition gear at the dealer and if I like it I take it home and try it there.  Your room will also influence the decision.

There are lots of great pre-amps out there but I love the transparency of Bryston gear and the 20 year warranty can't be beat.  I have a 4Bsst and I use a BP-25 with it and you can pick up a used one for about $1,000 if you don't want a phono stage in it.  A less expensive option would be a used AudioLab 8000 and if you can find one it will run about $300 to $350.  It is a heck of a pre-amp for the money and I still have one as a back up for my Bryston.

Good Listening,
Mike
