Subwoofer rattling at low frequency
« on: 5 Jun 2013, 04:53 am »
Hello all,
Just bought my Sunfire TrueSub a few months back and have been trying to tweak to get the best out of it. Recently, as I calibrated the sub using the built-in auto calibrator button in the back, I started to notice that the sub rattles at the beginning of the calibrating process (seems like rather at a very deep bass/low frequency).  As the tone getting higher or at a higher frequency, the rattling either seems to subside or no longer noticeable.  When listen to music, i hardly noticed any rattling but when watching some movies, I could hear the rattling here and there if I really pay attention to subwoofer effect.  So is this considered a normal thing for a subwoofer or something wrong with my sub already?  Thanks in advance.

Have you made certain that all of the screws are tight? One of my RELs managed to work some screws loose, which induced a rattle. One day, it just appeared. After tightening a few screws, the noise was eliminated. There are other possibilities, but this is an easy fix and not horribly unlikely.

By the way, does 's2k4now' refer to an automobile?

thanks for the response kevin(?). I guess these are so called "sealed" subwoofer so inaccessible from the outside but I am sure one can get to the internal from the back panel.  since the sub is still under warranty, I am afraid to touch it and void the warranty.

as per your other question, my username carries over from other forum and too lazy to come up with another name for wanting to be an audiophile wannabe...

I'm a member over there as well. :D

For a product that's still under warranty, I would definitely contact the manufacturer (or warranty provider, if it's a 3rd party). When I noticed my rattle, I did contact REL - after I resolved it (well out of warranty). We had a good laugh at the lock washers - try as they may, they couldn't keep the screws locked in place. If you are instructed to do something which would otherwise void your warranty, it will all be documented (still, get a name and record the date and time of the conversation - email is always best) and your warranty will not be nullified.

Good luck with this issue.

I had a Super Junior that had the same problem. I bought mine used so warranty did not apply. I took the back plate off and tightened every screw and bolt I could find and used silicone adhesive on all the hanging components.

This seemed to help, but this small sub would shake so hard to produce those low frequencies from such a small box.

I eventually sold it and moved on. I would recommend you send it back for warranty work and let the factory fix it.

kevin,
it's a little bit off topic here but that is a nice car and nice picture. if you are the one taking that picture, then you must be a photographty  hobbyist (pro) as well.

thank you and the other member for the response to my question--that's inline with what i suspect and i wasn't sure if this is normal or something really loose inside...
