pretty cool band from the Blackberry commercial

That simple, fuzzed out riff kept haunting my dreams so I looked em up

The band is called "Tame Impala" from Australia and the song is cool and proggy. Don't know anything about them but I might have to pick it up on the strength of this one song.

I couldn't make it past 0:45. The acid trip psychedelics became too much.
I do like the heavily distorted guitar rif, but it sound familiar, like something from the 70's or 80's.....
Check out the first four seconds, they've been done before.

Edgar Winter, Joan Jett.......maybe it was Blondie?

Don't watch it, just listen.. The song expands into prog territory right where you stopped  :thumb:

Of course it does. It's completely old sounding. But still awesome. I dunno, I like that chugga chugga sound. Sounds cocky.

Nah....it's more than that.
Check out the first four or five seconds.
You can't tell me that "hook" hasn't been done before.

Oh of course.

... Lenny Kravitz said it best back in the day when asked about his music. They criticized him for sounding derivative and he said something along the lines of "What would you rather have, some rock, some Motown swing, or some outer space S***?"

All those bands in the 70's sounded like each other in some way, same as a lot of today's music is closely connected. Nothing wrong with delving into the past if it's done well.

If you enjoyed that "sound", here's more!

I would further add that it's bands like this that actually get young people interested in checking out the past.

I'll buy all that....lock, stock, and barrel.
But that's a direct ripoff from 25 to 35 year old rock song.

Not to take away from the original intent of your first post, mind you.

And I agree, totally derivative. But if you can be derivative of an enjoyable sound, and manage to pull it off, or maybe even sound better, then you've got something people will like.

Sometimes all you need is a good song.

Alright, you got me thinking about it again this morning, and I couldn't go on without knowing where that sound came from.

Listen to the first 0:15 of your video:

And the first 0:15 of this video:

Cut the speed in half, and there's the Tame Impala song.
There. I rest my case. I'm happy now.

RClark's new fave band sounds like Black Sabbath and T-Rex got together and made an ijit baby. Tame Impala: the new Wolfmother.   :green:

I saw Tame Impala a couple months ago on their latest tour. They have a late 60s-70s prog/psyche sound, but I definitely wouldn't say they sounded much like Blondie at all. In the vocal delivery dept, a bit of the Beatles going on. Check out one of their two double LP sets before you start to form your opinions. They are FILLED with hooks. If you like heavy psyche-pop, you may be very surprised.

Every new band that comes about inevitably tries to get lumped in with others. If they can get lumped in too easily, they get criticized. If they are doing something totally unique, people say they are too weird.

Hopefully Black Mountain subscribes to the theory that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  :D

Go get yourself Lonerism, Tame Impala's latest is a great album...  And yeah, they "quote" just about everyartist from that great period of Psychedelic music from Donavan to Nektar.  I sorely missed it and I'm glad it's come back.

I say who cares.  I'm glad they "quoted" as much as I'm glad Steve Wilson does on "The Raven...".  There's enough time span in both releases (IMHO) to make it "okay".  There is a fine line between quoting and just plain ripping off.

Lol OH NO, don't you even go there Diamond Dog  :nono:

I just liked this one song. Not even close to matching the utter majesty that is (was?...?) WolfMother.
