Today I ran accross one refrence to the Sharp models  in an online magizine by the "Director of Media Devices" at Sharp which is as follows:

There isn't a vast array of audio that's cosmetically compatible with high-end home theater, says Mark Knox, director of digital media devices for Sharp Electronics, and therein lies the conundrum facing Knox as Sharp rolls out its new vertical 1-Bit audio home-theater systems that complement its Aquos liquid-crystal displays (see related story, page 84). "Today's consumers are a lot more concerned about how it looks and its internal capabilities. All of a sudden, you have to be everything," he says. "'Yes, it's pretty, and, yes, it sounds good, but I don't know if it's terribly high-tech.' Or: 'Yes, it's very high-tech, and, yes, it's very pretty, but maybe it doesn't sound good.' Unless you can address all these issues in some way, then somehow there's a concern on the part of the consumer that [the product is] not quite ready.

I am wodering if anyone has looked into these new 1-bit wonders from Sharp? I did read that they have some mighty expensive models also.

This unit I see at Target and was thinking of trying it as I might beable to  get a steep discount on one and throw away the speakers,any thoughts?

Looks like it may be the least desirable of the lot,but if I could get one at a substantial discount I'd be tempted to try one no doubt.

It might be the same as when they tried to say MASH dacs were better than 16bit DACs in the 90's.

I think Dan Mason had some good listening results,but where they end up in the ladder of what is the best performing for the $$ and with what speakers would be a whole other matter,

They might well be synergistic depending on what speakers you use also.

Helpful Vocab guide:

PCM = PCM

DM = PWM = (1-bit) DPCM

SDM = PDM = DSD


As a technology, Sigma-Delta Modulation is more advanced than Delta Modulation. The Sharp uses Sigma-Delta Modulation, while the TI's are Delta Modulation. However, it seems as if TI's execution of DM is more refined than Sharp's execution of SDM.
