4x4, Come on over and bring some Grain Belt Premium and tunes!  I hope you enjoy the MMG's.  They will come into their own in 50-100hrs.

Breaking in update:
Left them run 24x7 since Monday night playing a random list of music - it was the easiest for me at the time.
Tuesday - took out the ruler.  First placement - 3' from rear wall - no toe in.  Sounds good. A little toe in - sounds better at the moment.  Soundstage become coherent and imaging was impressive.
Wed - Moar bass!  This time I pulled them out to 40" from  rear wall inside measure, 43" outside measure (slight toe in) - Now we are getting there - you guys aren't kidding it is a game of inches.
Then I tried something crazy!  I hooked them up to my RWA Signature 15 LFP-V Edition amp(rated 15 Watts RMS per channel into 8-ohms/30 Watts RMS per channel into 4-ohms) WOW 3D and full sounding.
Listening to Wish You Were Here - yes I was there.

I was running my NCore NC400 (class D) rated 400W into 4-ohm - they have a very 3D sound as well - very impressed.

Tonight I am going to try the flaps to get them more vertical.  I may also try to move them around using the cardas calculator placement guide.

Or I may just grab a beer and listen....

I was just about to post when I caught that last part, Ncores huh? Btw, apparently they are more like 480 watts at 4ohm, according to measurements taken here by another user. They are pretty sweet together aren't they? Was just going to say welcome aboard, once you are sucked in by their presentation it will be a hard thing to forget.

Rclark - yeah - I read your posts about the Ncores and got curious - now I am an owner!  I found them to be very musical an 3D and am very happy at the moment with the combination of the MMGs and Ncores.  You say 480 watts - I'll believe it :thumb:

So today I thought I would try some making some stands ala brooklyn (thanks fort he idea BTW).  I made a bit of a modification to his design by adding a screwed down strap on the flaps to prevent my kids from knocking them  over if they were on the flaps.  I also found that when I put the speakers on the stands that the feet  were not level - they rocked on a the level surface.  I loosened the screws from the back of the MMGs, made sure that the speaker was resting level (flat) held the feet in  place also flat against the speaker stand and tightened the screws on the back of the speaker.  Now the feet are level with the base providing more support and are not wobbling on a flat surface.   Having the flaps screwed down really creates a nice strong contact points with the base.  Overall so far I am liking the sound.  I think the imaging became more precise.  I also like the fact I can slide them around easier until I find THE spot for them...

Haha  Funny you say  that, because I convinced another guy to do the same thing, he bought 1.7's and Ncores. He was pretty happy with the result too  :thumb:

And sweet vindication there, to hear you echo that they do indeed have all the strengths they possess as well as a 3D holographic presentation.

There is a future there for your MMG's if you stick with them, a LOT of guys here have them framed, and with high end crossovers or active crossovers.

BTW, you're going to be moving them around and finding new performance for weeks.. An inch or two here and there can really make a difference with these. Just the slightest adjustments can be audible.

Today marks my end of my 60 day trial of my MMGs.  It has been a great ride and I can't believe how great of deal these are.  I called  Magnepan the other day for and RMA and will return them.
I then called my local  dealer and placed an order for the 1.7s - yeah baby we are going big time now!!!  Last week I went into my dealer to listen the the 12and the 1.7.  I really like  the MMG, but I do have the space (I convinced  myself come hell  or high water they will work).  So now I wait a couple weeks for them to deliver - I live by the Magnepan Factory and she said that I could drop off the MMGs after I had the 1.7s hooked up because they wouldn't want me   to not have speakers - now how cool is that!  My local dealer was really great to talk to - answered all my stupid questions so I didn't need to bother you all...  They were very knowledgeable in the Magnepan line as they have been a dealer forever - very cool place I need to visit more often.  In fact when I was listening to the 1.7 at the dealer, at least 3 customers came by and said just do it - they also had them.

So again Steve - you were right the 1.7 will work - thanks to the MMG program making it possible to try before making the commitment.  I am now going to grab a couple good  beers and get a couple more good sessions out of my MMGs before they leave.

cheers,
Eric

Congrats - you won't regret it : having made the move myself from MMG to 1.7, the quasi ribbon mid / bass panel is really in a league considerably above the older non QR one in the MMG.  And as "controversial" as this may sound, I think it's the principal reason I doubt a "Gunned" MMG is going to sound as good as a 1.7, despite a more musical frame & better crossover.  That older panel may sound "warmer" (i.e. more obscure) to some, but it's just not gonna have the speed, detail and transparency of the QR based panel.  To each his own sound-wise : this "hobby" is very objective.  But by any objective measure, the QR panels win.

I think your biggest challenge will be ignoring the spouse / partner / whatever trying to get you to sell it for cosmetic reasons.  Many seem to have lost that battle.  Be strong & don't give in!

Yeah, but if Momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy!   :nono:

Seriously, my wife couldn't figure out why Maggies had to be "so far out in the room" until she heard them.  And now it's OK.   :thumb:

First I need to acknowledge I have a problem - OK I have a problem - I'm in - thanks.

This is the most important rule of marriage  - thanks for reminding me...  So far I am lucky - she hasn't asked how much all this "stuff" costs.

Problem? You don't have a problem. You have a very natural desire. Your brain craves music and it wants it delivered in a convincing manner. You're clearly only trying to maintain your mental health, which is necessary for your physical health. It should be a deductible, medical expense. Your wife, too, is apparently interested in your well being. I see no evidence of a problem. All appears to be most excellent.

Enjoy those most excellent 1.7s! :D

If you found joy with the MMGs, you should have no problem finding exquisite delight with the 1.7s. :thumb:

They arrived!  Up and running.  First impression is WOW.  Kevin you hit the nail on the head.  I am most happy with the upgrade - don't get me wrong I will be sad to see the MMGs go, but there is just much more here in my room now with the 1.7s.  I guess I could say if anyone is on the fence - just do it!! I am really liking the bass that filled in giving a much fuller, rounder and larger sound.
