Purchased a BDP-1
« on: 4 May 2013, 07:34 pm »
Purchased the BDP-1 yesterday.

Can't connect to my PC, so I figure the problem is I need the program disk to unlock my wireless and reconfigure. For the life of me I cannot find the wireless disk with the key code, how could I misplace that! Room needs a thorough cleaning and its not getting done today. So it looks like I have to go and buy another router so I have the program disk.

Anyway, initial impressions without the browser is the sound is more refined than my PC. However I am getting quite good sound from my PC so the difference seemed marginal at first and I was rather disappointed. However after the unit has broken it a bit it seems much better listening in stereo.

In multi-channel I'm annoyed as the BDP-1 is constantly flickering clipping on the display on my SP2. :|

Mag,

Sometimes the keycode is on a label on the router.  Give it a look before buying another one.

Hi Mag

That is a THX issue on the SP2- they require the signal to show clipping if the input voltage goes above 2 volts.

Thanks not really an issue for me, just worried that it will cause the display to wear out.

Finally got connected to the bdp-1 after many hours. Just typed the IP address into a new window on Firefox and I'm connected!

Now to see if it'll play video files.

Well it's playing a video, no video, just the audio in 48k, I'm not able to select audio track. Couldn't load other videos on thumb drive but will try a larger storage device later. 8)

Okay, got a better video soundtrack on thumb drive and it works. Had to extract the file first, and I already had just the pcm track selected previously.

To Play you select either VTS 01 or VTS 02 and it will play continuous or you can skip ahead by selecting another VTS #.

It sounded awesome before and now it sounds outstanding! 8)

hi, Mag!

- did the SP2 showed 'clipping' while the BDP was connected digital to any of the digital inputs?

- if you should use a Logitech programmable remote then try to load down the functions for the BDA-1. it will allow you to choose between different db levels from its analog outputs. you can choose from 0 to -3db. i think that already -2 or at least -3 will "turn off" the clipping and the display's flickering that annoys you will disappear. but you should know that otoh lowering the db will cause resolution loss. i've tried it a few times and have to say that i prefer the 'normal' function of the SP2's display with the lower db of the BDA-1. the resolution loss is not really audible if you ask me.

It depends on the recording, it doesn't clip with every song. When using the computer with usb I can lower the wave strength, depending on the song. In stereo bypass I believe the SP2 can handle like 4 volts and in multi-channel I believe it's 2 volts without showing clipping.

There might be a code on SP2 remote but don't know what it would be.

Correct - the SP2 will show the clipping because of THX licencing but it can easily handle much more voltage.

Okay, I think the reason I could not connect to the bdp-1 was my Firewall. Prior to typing in IP address in a new window in Firefox browser, I had to add the bdp-1 in Network Zones.

It shows Blocked and Trusted, I selected Add New Item, Name: bdp-1, Description: byston bdp-1, then in subnet the IP address which on my unit is 129.168.0.102.

Hope this can help someone else. 8)

Hi Mag

i also recommend Chome or Safari browsers over Firefox with the BDP.

After having the BDP-1 for a week, I thought I should post a better evaluation of the unit.

Initially I was disappointed because I thought it lacked mid-range. This was more likely that I didn't have the volume level matched as to what I was use too. It seems peculiar depending on the quality of the recording, some come out loud and clear and the bad recordings I have to crank to get mid-range. And it was one of these bad recordings that made my initial impression.

With what I believe is a better level-match, the bdp-1 plays slightly quieter than my computer, the mid-range is there plus better bass definition. And a refined sound that you can hear details in a recording that previously went unnoticed.

An example of this refined sound is a few songs by the Scorpians & John Mellancamp. I can actually discern the difficult to distinguish words. Also the song Conquistador by the Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra, my system could never play this song cleanly. The bdp-1 plays this song cleanly and what a great song it is when heard without distorting. 8)

Finally got around to using the spl meter to better level match the bdp-1 to volume I typically listened at with computer. With the average song I was listening at 8 on the volume dial of my SP2 in Neo:6 Music mode. With the bdp-1, the difference is approx. 2.5 notches which would be 5.5 on the volume dial.

And for those of you who don't know me, that's loud, 95-105 db 'C' weighted. :smoke:
