SCST with Sub
« on: 10 Apr 2013, 01:05 pm »
Just wondering if anyone is using a subwoofer with SCST for 2 channel music and if so is it a plus or not really needed. any input would be great.

That would depend alot upon your room (size, layout, etc) as well as what type of music you like to listen to and volume you want to get to.

Perhaps you can share some additional details?

Thanks for the reply, the room the speakers are in is about 14 feet  wide by 20 feet long. The speakers are on the 14 foot wall I listen at moderate listening levels but my wife tends to turn up the music while cleaning. At lower levels its seems the bass could be boosted a little but I don't know if a sub woofer would hinder or benefit as we only use it for 2 channel music. Hate to spend a bunch to find out it was a flop, that's why I was wondering if other with SCST'S were using a sub with positive results.

Also I am using a XPA-2 currently to power the SCST's and I have low ceilings, Eight foot in the room. again sorry for what seems like slow response as its seems I can't get approval.

No 2 channel SCST owners using a sub? no input, good, bad or ugly.

I wouldn't be without subs for 2-channel audio.  The first place you should start is measuring your in-room frequency response.  You may find moving your speakers and/or listening position could make all the difference in the world.  It would be nice to see what you have.  Also, the ability to measure in-room frequency response is critical if you move to using a sub or two.

Check out Room EQ Wizard at hometheatershack.com to get started. You have fantastic speakers.  Now get them set up properly to take advantage of what they can do.

+1 :thumb:

Edit: I guess I should add some details....

Using a sub with my (former) HT2-TLs, I noticed 2 things.

1.  Bass was cleaner and more extended;  a good dedicated sub is more capable and can be placed in the best spot for bass.
2.  Midrange was cleaner since the mid/bass drivers in the HT2-TL no longer had to produce midrange details while violently moving to produce low frequencies at the same time.

I use a single REL T-2 in a small listening room ( 10 x 11 ) with standard SongTowers. Works great with the Songs in regard to both bass extension and integration. In the past I've used an ACI Titan with excellent results as well. Go for it.

Thanks for the insight, I guess at some point I have to do EQ tests, this old guy has been a little intimidated by it but I guess I need to put on my big boy pants and make it happen.

Don’t get me wrong the SCST sound great as I do about 40 percent of my listening on these, the other 60 percent is in the backyard around the pool  which has 2 - JBL control 30’s, 2 – JBL control 29’s and a SB210 sub with passive crossover to the 29’s so I guess with the volume of speakers here the bass seems more pronounced and I wanted to here a little more sonic presence in the house so I guess I will have to take the plunge and thanks again, as I did not want to do something I would regret later as we have all do before.

Hmmm, now to sneak a monster in the house

I run my SCSTs with a Salk/Rythmik 15" and I think it's pretty fantastic.  I ran the SCSTs without a sub for about 2 months and just got the Rythmik last week.  I thought the SCSTs were surprisingly good for bass but, the Rythmik is an absolute monster and makes a very noticeable difference.

I'm using the 15" Salk/Rythmik (without the passive radiators).  When I originally bought the SCSTs, I was using one of the medium sized Hsu subs and it sounded good but, I felt like I could really localize the sub if I crossed it over higher than 60Hz.  When I got the Rythmik, I initially set the crossover to 60Hz but later found that I couldn't localize it at 80Hz and everything sounded excellent setup like that.  I think the reason I was able to cross it over at a higher frequency without localization is because the bass from the Rythmik is so tight that it blends perfectly with the SCSTs.

Well, pulled the trigger on 15" Salk/Rythmik (without the passive radiators).  now the wait is on, thanks for all the input.

I have an SVS SB13, and surprisingly, I could locate it when crossed over at 80hz.  I was kind of stumped, as I thought 100+hz was the "magic" number for localizing.  I don't think it's a subwoofer issue, maybe it's the room or the crossover slope (i.e., you're still getting some content north of 100hz).
