Pioneer PLC590/Grace G714 Setup Help
« on: 8 May 2013, 02:46 am »
Hey All,
I recently came across a turntable setup like few others. It was my Dad's and I want to give it a proper revival. Everything functions mechanically perfectly but there is no phono/audio cable out. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on cables that could work and if at all possible some advice on proper installation techniques  Thanks for any and all information

Hi, and welcome to Vinyl Circle where auditory insanity bliss reign supreme.

You need a tonearm cable that plugs into the bottom of the arm.  These are traditionally a five pin female cable with RCA + ground wire on one end and a plug called a 5 pin DIN connector.

Grace arms are unique and need a male connector on the end of the cable.  If you go to a shop or on line store that sells tonearm cables, look for a Grace type cable.  Before you buy the cable, you need to check if you have enough room underneath for a cable with a straight plug, or if you need a cable that is in an L shape, for a table with little room underneath.  The easiest way to check is to turn the table so you have the back facing you on the edge of a support, and look underneath.  Look and see where the plug-in part is, in relation to the bottom.  Chances are a straight plug will work, but you should check.  Don't order an L plug "just in case".  You might not have sideways room.

It might be easier to remove the arm from the base to install the cable.  I think your arm has 2 fittings in the arm base that allow you to adjust the arm height - physically raise or lower the vertical supporting structure called the pillar.  Loosen these fittings and you can remove the entire arm and plugging in the cable is straightforward.  Thread the cable through the hole and tighten the fittings.

Don't be shy about asking questions.  The only dumb question is one that isn't asked.

Aha! I removed the tonearm and found exactly what you mentioned. I've been leery of taking it apart just because of it's value but it's a good thing I did. I'm assuming any 5 pin Male phono cable should work then...I know there is a cable war where some people believe high quality cables spell the difference in listening quality but I think I'l try a basic cable before going all out. Perhaps this one:  http://www.juno.co.uk/products/5-pin-male-din-plug-to-2-x-male-rca-phono-plugs-1-2m-black/487257-01/ . Again, thanks for all of your assistance.

...or not. After looking at that cable, I realized that the DIN plugs don't look like quite the right fit. I probably have to specialize more. Any good suggestions off hand? I've seen this (http://silverliningcables.com/Tonearm-Cables.php) in the Mdin version which looks like it would fit my needs better but I'm afraid of the price. I'm thinking of making my own and seeing where that takes me as well.

Not all DIN plugs are tonearm plugs.  Most manufacturers of tonearm cables offer ones made for Grace arms with a male plug.  Yes, some of them are very expensive.  Here's a ready-made cable:

This is a male DIN for DIY.  Call them first just to make sure it's for tonearms.
