Dire Straits -- Brothers In Arms

is a great recording with a nice dynamic range, albeit not jazz or classical

My personal favorite is Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Collosus.  It's a mono recording, but very very well done on XRCD.

Other jazz favorites where the recording/mastering is really superb:

Bill Evans - Sunday at the Village Vanguard

Sonny Rollins - Way Out West

Wes Montgomery - Full House

Jazz at the Pawnshop (they charge an arm and a leg for this one, and that's on top of the arm and leg they charge for XRCDs in general.  But this is one of those recordings that was a staple of high end audio shows for a good number of years)

The Famous Sound of Three Blind Mice - (soon to be re-released on XRCD24).  Superb recording (the first track is one of those "wow" tracks that's great for demoing systems to people unfamiliar with high end audio).  Overall very good jazz performances.

Good performances, but the recordings are old enough that even with the good XRCD mastering/manufacturing, you aren't getting the best sound:

Oscar Peterson and Dizzy Gillespie

Count Basie - The Time Keepers

Blues:

Howlin' Wolf - Goin' Away

Classical (admittedly, I am not a fan of a lot of the music JVC has put onto XRCD...most have good sound, but haven't listened much to them because I'm not so into the music.  Here are a couple of classics that are pretty good there.):

Also Sprach Zarathustra - Chicago Symphony

Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No.1  - Van Cliburn

Ah...right.  I forgot about Patricia Barber's Companion XRCD.  On top of a great performance, this one can really challenge a system with the acoustic bass in a few of the tracks (not a fast/gut-wrenching bass, but one that has a lot of texture and depth to it...on a great system, it really sounds awesome...)

I haven't yet heard an XRCD I didn't like.  I have all of the jazz recordings Phil mentions plus Bill Evans' Explorations and Waltz for Debby.  Waltz for Debby is the remainder of the tracks recorded at the same Village Vanguard session documented on Sunday at the Village Vanguard and is a must if you dig Bill.  I find that the soundstage leaves a hole in the center on the Village Vanguard recordings but have grown used to it.  Explorations is a great studio album and sounds brilliant on XRCD.  Goin' Away is not the most compelling Howlin' Wolf album but the mastering is excellent.  If you really want a kickass blues recording that sounds brilliant, seek out the Mofi recording of Muddy Waters Real Folk Singer.  It'll cost you but its worth it.  Its one of the best sounding CDs I have and one of the best blues records I have.  Period.  Buddy Guy plays with him.

Daniel,

I assume you mean Muddy Waters' Folk Singer?  He's got another one called Real Folk Blues, but Buddy Guy only appears on Folk Singer...

I couldn't agree more. The acoustic bass is alive on "Companion".

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!

I just had some coupons here for XRCD's that give me $10 off each CD but it expires at the end of this month so I wanted to get some before time runs out.

Thanks! :D

I just picked up Salena Jones "Romance" XRCD24 and it's terrific. I believe this is a new title from JVC.

You probably can't use coupons for the "Brothers in Arms" & "Hell Freezes Over" XRCDs but these are well worth it, IMO. They are leaps and bounds above the current remasterd versions.

Duke Ellington's Big 4 on xrcd is a great disc.  Joe Pass, Ray Brown and Louis Bellson complete the group and the version of Prelude to a Kiss is awesome.  This is one of my favorites.

Symphony Fantastique
Munch / Boston Symphony

great, great performance

Unfortunately that's about the only one I'd recommend, unless you are a Heifetz fan, which I am not.

Two of my favorites....Kenny Drew - "Kenny Drew Trio" and Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane - "Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane". Both excellent sounding recordings. Here's the link for the XRCD catalog, lots of excellent selections ... http://www.xrcd.net/shopping/index.asp  :)
