Solid state equivalent to Decware Zen?
« on: 19 Dec 2015, 09:45 am »
In the scheme of things, if one is looking at a top performing tube amp for Omegas, the Decware Zen is reputed to be about as good at it gets.  For $1K, what one gives up is quantity of watts, but one gets quality.

Is there an equivalent in the solid state world?  Low watts but super high quality.  Decent pricing.

Curious.

Came to mind First Watt(SE and mono) or an Aleph used.

If you're into DIY, Tyson liked my 7297 over his Aleph J; and Dave said it was a nice match for his Omegas.

Used Marantz or Conrad Johnson Sonograph. Nelson Pass SE as well. There is always N-core if you lie that sound.

I am using a Dayens Ampino integrated amp with my Omega Outlaw 1.5 Way Towers. The sound is sublime to my ears and to my partners ears. I paid $360 for it used on Audiogon and new ones run around $600 or so. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I can second the Dayens Ampino recommendation though I haven't heard it with Omega speakers.

I think it would be hard to beat Folsom's amp, it's pretty laid-back... more like a tube amp than SS. This works great with the Omegas.

Gain clones...Audiosector or Clones Audio, for example. Great little pieces.

If you don't mind a little DIY, I suspect that most of the Pass Labs amps would sound great with Omegas. These, for the most part, are class A amps that sound similar to tube amps . They also offer great value for the money.

My mother and grandmother are around for Christmas. My grandmother wanted to know how much $ and said, "oh you could sell that to muscians and people." And my mother who's sat in front of $60k system with me said, "oh now I get it!"

While I'm a little biased, I'd recommend FirstWatt DIY projects over any Gainclone but the Modulous86 perhaps.
