Pass x250.5 vs bryston?
« on: 17 Apr 2013, 07:39 pm »
Has anyone moved from a Pass x250.5 to a Bryston 4Bsst² or 14Bsst² (or the other way around)?

I know they both have a different sound, but I'm undecided between the two.  I'd love to hear if anyone has any experience with both the x250.5 and newer sst² amps

If you can audition them you will get truer and clearer decision.  :thumb:

This is too subjective to answer objectively.  Personally, I prefer Pass Labs amps for solid state. The only have two active gain stages, low feedback, and very high bias, meaning that they run in Class A until transients demand more power.  Bryston no doubt makes fine equipment as well, albeit even more conventional than the Pass Labs.

Check out Reno Hi Fi.  You can audition the Pass Labs gear for 10 days in home (where you really need to hear it).  If it's not for you, just send it back.  Hard to beat that.

I've tried both and purchased the X-250.5

This was a while back. I've since gone thru several Pass upgrades and now have the XA-160.5's, and will most likely go to their XS amps in the future.

If I ever needed to go back to one stereo amplifier, it would be the X-250.5 and without hesitation. If your speakers are efficient I'd also look at the XA-30.5, as this little beauty packs a punch with a velvet glove. Another worthy contender is the ModWright KWA-150SE but I prefer the Pass.

Mark at Reno Hi-Fi goes above and beyond to accommodate.
