need advice...on Odyssey choices
« on: 9 Apr 2013, 05:32 am »
I have an:
 Accuphase c200
Vandersteen 2ce's with 2 Vandersteen subs
Rega RP1 ortofon blue
Rega Apollo R

Using a Adcom gfa 555II and want to upgrade.

Looking at a set of Odyssey Audio Khartago Mono Extreme.

Its hard to buy without a demo and am not a fan of just trying them on the guarantee.  Sounds like they take a while to break in,

Please share your thoughts on these , soundstage, bass, overall compared to the Adcom.

Thank you

I have the Odyssey Khartago Extreme (stereo) and the Adcom GFA 555II. I have ran both with Pi Speakers (4 Pi model with upgraded drivers and crossover). In my opinion the amps are quite different, the Odyssey is basically grain free and easier to listen to. Im not an audio reviewer, but the Adcom seems "edgy" by comparison. Overall, I don't think I will be replacing the Khartago any time soon. Rather, I am likely going to send it in for a mono conversion and buy a second. I am using the Adcom to drive two 12"DIY passive subs - it works great as a sub amp as long as you don't require massive amounts of power.

I have Magnepan speakers in long term storage, when I return to the US I will run them with the Khartago to see how they match. I hated the Adcom paired with the Maggie's.

Hope this helps with your decision.

I owned a tricked out pair of Stratos Monos for several years.  Excellent amps overall and just silly good for the money.  Powerful, smooth, clean, great imaging, quiet, wamr(not colored), detailed (not etched), basically everything you'd want in an amp.  One of those pieces that does nothing wrong.  Any 'sins' are sins of omission rather than commission - and those are small.

The Khartago is very similar sounding, just not as powerful.

They will do a bit of Jekyl and Hyde on you while breaking in.  Just wire your speakers out of phase pointing at each other and play some white/pink noise.

I had an Adcom gfa 555 and then in 2003 I bought an Odyssey Stratos with the cap upgrade. Except for a few instances it's been running 24/7 for 10 years. It did take a while to break in but I haven't once thought about replacing it. The Adcom was a decent amp but IMHO the Stratos was a huge upgrade.

I got to audition a pair of stratos extreme monos and am going to buy them. I was blown away by the soundstage from a SS amp. Pick up Wednesday night, can't wait.

Congrats. I loved mine, only moved off of them when I went to very high efficiency speakers. Couldn't ask for a more supportive manufacturer, Klaus goes more than the "extra mile". Enjoy.

Have had them on for 24 hours now ....

Very nice ...like the sound ...I listen to a lot of jazz and trumpets don't sting my ears like my adcom did. I am very happy with these amps. Winners.

Before I went into tubes, I used an Accupase amp. Somewhat similar to the Stratos SE, but the SE's seemed to have much more dynamic response with a deeper bass section (as in power wise). The upper ends were similar, but maybe a little tighter with the SE's. Glass Ceiling amps are another ball game. They go much deeper and higher with a lot more force behind the the subject matter. The Accuphase amps were not colored in anyway, but the sound was darker and much less transparent. I felt the GC amps were much closer to live music all the way around. I did have a some friends over for a listen, as this would be the last word in getting it right. Two of them were in the studio when the recorded Kinda Blue, and the other guy is a well known bass player. The bassist instantly caught the strings and virtually identifed them! The two old men said it was as close to getting it right as they'd heard, but still gave it a 90% (both were reed players). I was happy! I wanted to get Mel Rhyne down here for a listen to some Wes Montgomery stuff to see if I needed to do some tweeks, but we never could get together. The two old guys pointed out that the amps seemed to get the location of the musicians in the right spot, and both said it was very very close to being right there.

Thats quiet an achievement by the amp considering accuphase costs a hell lot more then stratos

I honestly have felt than many audio equipment manufacturers have been traveling on their name plate for eons, and then over charging the consumer to boot. I like Accuphase stuff, but also have some complaints about it. It's not over built very much, and will distort if driven very hard in a large room. I cooked the output transistors twice, and that's a real pain to repair (the way they designed their system). But compaired to 97% of the other Asian amps they are better. Prefer a higher impedence load, and do some things very well. But on the otherhand the Odyssey amps really roll with the high impedence loads in my book. I'd almost swear they were designed that way. I once had a pair of Meadowlark speakers that were designed for tubes from the get go. The Stratos SE's really shined with them. (minimum of a 6 ohm load, and a high of either 12 or 16 ohms). They cruise with Maggies, and that's saying a lot.
