I chose them over the HT2-TL because of cabinet size, and price. My plan was originally for standard Songtowers, so I have stretched the budget to as high as it will go.I chose a combination of veneers. Natural curly maple, except for the front baffle, which will be espresso dyed walnut.
with this upgrade, how deep would they play?
The 5" W15's and 6" W16's are quite similar in terms of performance parameters. The difference is the cone size. The W16's will be capable of moving more air down low so the bass will seem to have a little more weight and heft. The W16's frame size is the same as the W15's. So the width of the cabinet can be the same 8". The performance in the bass region will sit about half way between the Supercharged SongTowers and the Veracity HT2-TL's with their 7" W18's. Other than that, there is no significant performance difference.
I didn't have a regular SCST for comparison, but I was certainly impressed with the performance of the W16. It's usually found in small, premium priced monitors (Like the $7,000 Joseph Audio Pulsar), so I wasn't expecting much in the deep bass department. But when I finished the crossover and ran some test tones, it was literally shaking the room at 32 Hz. Lots of reach and power handling. Of course, they cost something between $$$$$$$$$$ and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Congrats!
I finally placed my order (after coveting Salk speakers for 4 years) for Supercharged Songtowers and a Supercharged Song Center. I chose the W16 upgrade for the towers, since my current sub (Velodyne CT-100) is not of the musical variety...I figure I will listen to 2 channel music sans sub, and only use the sub for home theatre. Maybe next year I will look into a Salk Rhythmik if I see (hear) the need. Now the waiting (and stalking the progress tracking website) begins!
Congratulations… I can see myself coveting Salks for about 4 years as well! I have the Velodyne CT-120…. maybe my next upgrade… although, I wouldn't mind upgrading my center… oh…. and did I mention my AVR. Way to many things to upgrade. This is a FUN hobby isn't it? We look forward to hearing what you think of these new speakers! BTW, what are they replacing?
