Help with older gear (Krell, Accuphase, more)
« on: 7 Apr 2013, 11:14 pm »
My sister's father in law is looking to sell his system.  He bought it all around 1987, but it seriously only has a few hundred hours on it.  The components have never left the rack in 25 years, so they look pristine (at least from the front. I haven't taken anything out yet). The amplifier has been directly under a large fan system that always kept it cool.

The gear:

Preamp:
Krell KRS2 (and KRSP-2)

Amp
Krell KSA80 Class A

Tuner
Accuphase T-107

CD Player
Accuphase DP-70

Speakers
Wilson Audio Tiny Tot.  There is a "2" on the back, but I'm not familiar enough with the Wilson line this early in their history to know if there was a WATT 2 in 1987/1988

Subwoofer
Entec LF20

Nakamichi Dragon cassette

The gear really does look great and you'd never know it was 25 years old. Anyway, is there still a market for these pieces? I'm guessing the Krell gear still has somewhat of a market, but I don't know if the Accuphase does.  I know plenty of people interested in the Dragon, so that's answered...

Since the amp is 25 years old, I know the first thought would be replacing the capacitors, but if this amp wasn't ever even used for 1000 hours, is it more age or usage that would require the capacitors to be replaced?

Anyone else have any thoughts?  What if you were asked to try to sell this stuff?  Anything I should look for that I haven't mentioned?

Thanks for any help...

I'd guess the Krell and Wilson stuff should go fairly easily.  Krell was at the top of their game around then.  And Wilson has a huge following.  I wouldn't expect too much from the CD player as the technology has come a long way since 1987 and it could be bested with an inexpensive new player.  Tuners seem to not be in demand these days since radio generally stinks.  I'd aim low with that one too but you never know, there could be Accuphase collectors out there.

Caps are probably fine.  A check-up wouldn't hurt and could brighten up the resale price.  But caps were pretty well made back then.  If they aren't leaking then leave 'em.  The transistors, on the other hand, probably haven't been made since 1987!

If you want to sell the stuff quickly and not worry about pricing (i.e. let the market decide for you) put the stuff up for auction on Audiogon or ebay.

That sure was a state of the art system for 1987!

You have tuner fanatics out there and the Accuphase is a good one.  You can fetch a good price for it if you're patient.

I had one of their early tuners and it's great.  However, I don't listen to radio much anymore.  You still got old guys who think tuners picking up a good signal can sound as good as anything.  In my limited exposure to this type of listening, I think there's some truth to that.  However, I just don't listen to these stations enough to justify keeping a separate tuner.
