Currently have some Speakerlab Corner Horns
« on: 6 Feb 2013, 03:06 pm »
I currently have some 20 year old Speakerlab Corner Horns and am considering building some open baffles. My question is will there be a big difference in the bass. The horns thru much of the frequency range would be bested by the open baffle but what about the bass. The horns put out a real wallop in the bass.

Ok I know this is an open baffle circle but I'll bet many of you have heard horn loaded speakers. To me the bass is a lot different than closed box or vented speakers. It really seams to fill the room. I use them for home theater as well as music. Much better on HT.

Hi, I'm the 'new guy' here, but I have owned Speakerlab 'K' speakers in the past, and now own OB from Decware(ZOB). Your question is a kind of apples and oranges sort of thing. No doubt the  K's have bass that FEW speakers are capable of. In fact I have never heard bass like that again. Having said that, the OB speakers that I have and any other OB speaker will NOT have anywhere near the impact of a folded horn. That is not to say that they don't have good bass. In fact, I find their bass to be more natural and musical. It would be a good idea to hear OB speaker design before you make a decision since the sound of each design couldn't be more different.         Greg

P.S. here is the ZOB design that I built. You can read about it in detail on the Decware site.
