Sony's next gen gaming console (will be out before Dec, possibly a lot earlier) has the capability to display movies at 4K resolution and Sony is actually planning a 4K movie service for the console,  a streaming service similar to Vudu HD or Netflix, but for 4K playback.

Was going to post this a while ago, just forgot.

Hate to be the party pooper, but this article alleges that 4K resolution is essentially superfluous, and hence, useless.

I think for the projector crowd it will be a godsend.

He's thinking too small, that article will be a joke in ten years. Everyone will be buying cheap, wall sized 4K tv's.

i feel the same way about audio - why would anyone ever want resolution past 16/44?  24/96 and especially 24/192 is a complete waste!  4K is exactly the same.

I look at my living room, 52", made in 1999 rear projector tv and that thing is a monstrousity. A crt would be about the same size and much heavier. In my bedroom I have a 52" 720P plasma and I can about balance it on my finger. Exaggerating of course, but vastly lighter, slimmer, Magnepan slim.

Why couldn't we have extremely large, maybe even modular screens at 4K in ten years, and at a reasonable price?

When that day comes, 1080P tv's will be quaint at best.

Anyone running a tv over 480P is probably an elitist driving one of those fancy horseless carriages to work. Why fix what ain't broken?

TV's might get humungous but my room will still be the same size.  I have a 50 inch now and could probably go to 60.   Anything beyond that would be crazy at my place.  I am sure a lot of people with American size monster houses will want larger than that but it won't be mass market...

Let me put it this way - I got my first 1080p capable screen this time last year, and only because I WON it.

I won't be picking up anything beyond a 1080p 60 plasma for the basement, or at best a 1080p PJ.

I will wait until 4K, 8K, 64K or whatever is available when one of my displays dies, and buy what fits in my house then.

I guess to further be honest, I don't listen to hi rez either, so I must be a Luddite!

It's going to be all about features not resolution. Computers are a great example. They have been ridiculously fast for the past few years but only a tiny minority care about that - the video card and memory are more likely to be the bottleneck than the cpu. Everyone else is focused on making them smaller and incorporating more and more features. TVs are slowly replacing basic computing and home theater needs w/ internet access, streaming media access, networking, skype, etc... When Apple and Google debut their TVs that's what will happen. TV will become the main interface like we have seen in so many movies since Kubrick's 2001. Televisions will change dramatically long before 4 and 8k make their way into the mainstream market. The resolution will not be the main selling point, just an added value as CPU power is not with current computing.

I have a smaller screen currently (92"), but 4k capability would be a great reason to go back to a 133" screen or even larger. I really enjoy having both a nice display for regular watching and also a projector for movies and big events.

Who cares about mass market. As long as you personally have the space, you personally can watch movies in 4K. Sony is launching that service in 2014.

I think it's a great feature and is really a nod to the HT people who embraced the PS3 as a Bluray player/Netflix hub.

You mentioned reasonable price.  Mainstream or mass market brings the price down.

Well, mass market is inevitable regardless.
