Cheap & Cheerful USB Sound Cards?
« on: 7 Apr 2013, 03:44 am »
Hello fellow audiophools... I have a bunch of vinyl archived onto VHS HiFi tapes that I want to digitize. These were done on a high-end Panasonic machine (with manual level controls) back in the day from a Harman Kardon TT with Longhorn Grado cart into a Van Alstine SuperPAS 4i hybrid phono preamp section, so the quality is pretty good. Have scrounged a VHS hifi machine and am now looking for an inexpensive (Oh, what the hell, I'll say it: CHEAP) USB sound card to get this material into my 'pooter. Right now I am aware of the Behringer UCA202 and Griffin iMic, both of which have reps for "punching above their weight". I might go a little more if the SQ justifies it but really looking to do this project on a shoestring. Suggestions as to anything else I should consider are welcomed.

PS, as I mainly listen to rock, jazz, and blues, very little orchestral back then (no 16Hz organ tones), I am thinking of putting the feed thru a high pass filter set at about at 20-30 Hz to keep rumble out of the end result... any thoughts on this?

What bit and sample rate where you looking for? 16/44 USB cards are cheap (less than $30). 24/96 are over $100 and 24/192 are over $300.

Probably something that goes to 16/48K would be sufficient. Maybe 24/48 if such a beast even exists. No real need for sample rates higher than 48.

I have one of those cheap 16/44 ones, but I have not yet used it's A/D conversion capability. I am using it as a DAC currently. Works fine as a DAC and a USB/SPDIF converter.

Here is what I have.

I had a first gen iMic but it did the "bzzzt" on me not long ago which is why I'm getting a new one. Heard the UCA202 is pretty good for an el cheapo unit. Just want to see what else is out there in the el cheapo ( <$50) range.
