Abused CDs - a genre thing?
« on: 27 Mar 2013, 12:13 am »

An interesting observation while perusing  used CDs at our local Goodwill store ensues.

Rock, Metal and Rap CDs have the highest occurrence of abuse with respect to care and handling as this genre has a very high percentage of most horrendous scratches on the CD. Next comes the country music CDs in this hierarchy of mishandling.

On the other end of the spectrum; Blues, Jazz, Classical and Female artists (non-rock, metal, rap and country that is) are the best cared for CDs on the shelf with a very low percentage of them having scratches of any kind - many of them I would certainly label as “mint.”

The CD jewel cases also mimic their associated CDs in condition, including the album art. On the other hand, when I purchase CDs at my favourite used CD store, Sonic Boom, only a very few CDs are sold and marked as “scuffed.” The staff most likely screens out the CDs in very poor condition and will not purchase them from the individual selling them whereas when a CD is donated to Goodwill, it will automatically go on the shelf with no inspection.

Has anyone else noticed this while purchasing used CDs

I purchase my used CD's from two sources...Amazon and CD Universe.  Mostly metal and progressive.  Never had a quality issue so I'll assert their screening process is quite adequate.

Agreed, I also purchase used CDs from Discogs, CDandLP and Amazon - to name a few. Up to date, the grading scale of my CD purchases from these sources has been very accurate. Flea Markets, Garage Sales, Goodwill and Kijiji on the other hand is where the majority of abused CDs are found. CD Universe is also great for stocking some hard to find albums.

I agree the stuff you find in Goodwill can be stereo(get it?)typed that different genres are more likely to be trashed.

Whether it comes from a preponderance of country :banghead: music in certain parts of the country vs metal, who's to say?  Beer-drinking yahoos (nothing personal, BISL) or stoned head-bangers, what's the difference? :stupid: :peek:

Hello PRELUDE  :D

This is a photo I pulled off of the internet - actually quite a few CDs looked like this one at Goodwill today. I would not want to feed it to my CD player :nono:

Seems to me most CDs abusers are DJs, which include vinyl.

I was VERY careful with my cds and lps during my DJ-ing days. Most of them still looked like new when I sold it all (which I still to this day regret doing).
I have seen a few disks like that coming in from second hand Amazon sellers...

DJeing is not a comtemplative job, even without scratching.
Although in the 1970s I do it and were careful with the LPs.

I've borrowed a bunch of CDs from my local library.  I've had read issues with every genre.  It really depends on how many people checked out said CD.  The excrption to the rule and by far the consistsntly worst - kids CDs.  Same fan be said for DVDs.

For the record, I have a 2 year old, hence the kids CDs.  I'm not trying to lure any kids into a van with no windows playing Kids Bopz or Barney CDs.

My CD's tend to get banged-up when I use them in the car for any length of time. I went out and bought a CD repair kit. It looks like a Sony Walkman and comes with 2 different sets of refinishing discs, one for a simple polish and clean, and the other shaves off a bit more plastic  :green:

It has about a 50% strike rate in restoring CD's that once skipped into CD's that no longer skip

It works well with DVD's too.

I find it's the same thing with used vinyl.  Only difference is with some of the fold-out or gatefold LP's, you get an extra bonus of a few flakes of "vegetation" or even a seed or two!!!

OH, The Horror.  :o  A 50% success rate is also a 50% failure rate.

My CDs only see the inside of my car when I bring them home from the store. I can burn copies that are better than originals and I don't risk much when they are left in a hot car.

No :nono:...... probably because they played and handled by adults. :icon_lol:
I check out cd's from the local library and it's the same story... rock = more scratches. Jazz are almost always close to perfect and the jazz cds are checked out quite often too.
