Newbie looking for a bedroom setup under $400
« on: 30 Mar 2013, 08:53 pm »
Hello everyone. I'm looking forward to learning alot here.

I currently have a set of audioengine a2's in my bedroom. I am looking to upgrade to something with a bit larger sound stage that can better fill the room. My budget is $400 so I'll probably try to source some used components. I mostly listen to classical and jazz. Some blues. Very little vocal.

I'm considering:
1. Audioengine a5+
2. Audioengine p4 + n22 amp.
3. PSB Alpha b1 + n22 amp or perhaps a class T amp.

Anything else I should be considering? What would the difference be between a good class T amp and something like the n22?

Thanks!

Pioneer BS 22 speakers, $80 if you find them on sale at BB or Amazon.  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=113182.0

What are your placement options? I have some a5 speakers and love then, but they were WAY better on stands properly setup in my basement than they are sitting next to the wall in my kitchen. Maybe some stands and some new placement options might be the cheapest upgrade.

Would headphones work for you?

+1 on those Pioneer speakers. You could pair them with a Class D Audio kit. Or a vintage receiver or integrated amp would work.

Love the soundstage on these speakers. A stunning Andrew Jones design at an amazing price.

+2 on the Pioneers.

I have the prior model Pioneers in my garage with an $80 Dayton audio amp being fed by an old iPod. And it is really good for that price.

Oh yeah, I really like this Dayton amp:

As best I can tell, it is a rebadged Emotiva BPA-1, which had been discontinued by Emotiva.

Very versatile, it can be re-purposed as a subwoofer amp if you have a passive sub (which I did).

It looks like MLS has a nice set-up for not much loot in the Pioneer speaker thread.
