Dayton PS220-8 Open baffle speaker
« on: 23 Feb 2013, 08:46 pm »
Dear all,

I have just finished a new open baffle speaker using the wide range Dayton PS220-8 and the Monacor SPA-15PA for bass.
please note there are some differences betweeen the schema and the real thing, as I re-used some older components...

It is now tested for some monthes and I can tell you the sound is really beautifull, with an excellent balance. The Dayton offer excellent imaging as well as a lot of transient and a lot of space...no need of a tweeter with it.

The size of bamboo is 110cm per 40cm and the wings are 60cm per 30cm.

Schema is attached, so if anybody want to make a copy, please feel free.

With all best regards,

Vigoon

Certainly interesting Vigoon.

How did you arrive at the values of your Notch filter for the Dayton ?
You never had A&D R1524 ?

Well, I have to say they sound wonderfull...However, I prefer the A&D R1524 to the Monacor SPA-15PA, which is excellent, but I think the A&D has richer, deeper bass response...Will switch back to them.
As a friend wanted to try them, I sold them to him.
It is fun to experiment loudspeakers...Next to the Dayton, I would like to try those ones:

https://www.intertechnik.com/Shop/Loudspeakers/Gradient-Axis/_71105_H12-AX-08_1768,en,6800,96790?no=intro&app=Lautsprecher-Shop/Loudspeakers/Gradient-Axis/&dummy=&navid=1768&lang=en&basis=6800&detail=96790&extra1=&extra2=

The Gradient Axis AX-08 seems to be very interesting (a cheaper alternative to the Dayton SP220-8).

As I have very low knowledges about electricity, a friend helped me for the filter and suggested me this combination...I'm deeply indepted to him...

I wouldn't be very concerned by the woofers, even if I think the RD1524 will be the better in OB configurations.

But regarding the Dayton, even if it sounds good, and I do not doubt that, there is so much intercourse all over the place.
So if you have any means, do measure the response.

Great looking speakers.  I am planning on using these drivers as the front stage of my HT as LF-C-RF speakers with a subwoofer.  I was wondering what is the width of the baffle that you are using ? Thanks.

The baffles are 110cm high x 40cm wide x 30cm deep...
