Speaker placement being constant.  What effects imaging more, speakers or amp?

Speakers. Some say, and I'm not one of them, the Amp has very little to do with it.

Definitely speakers, as long as your amp has a very low noise floor, and high separation between channel (which most modern amps do) your speakers will have the greatest impact on imaging.

Speakers...but seems to me that beyond that, not all types of speakers are created equal in terms of how well they image. I personally find two-ways do it best but that's just my opinion ...and Lord knows I could be wrong !  :green:

I would think if the amp/int was puting out a balanced/equal siganal it would be up to the speakers to do there stuff....

A no brainer here, the speakers of course, with the musical recording being first.  Next is speaker placement then room acoustics.  Behind that cables, preamp and source components.  However, if all that is equal, then different amps can make significant differences in imaging and soundstaging.  Said another way, you can easily hear imaging change when you switch out amps in a familiar system, you can hear imaging changes with different speakers in any system you plug them in to.

What Let said.  Starting with recordings that have this info in them.  Some speakers image better than others.  Many times this has to do with their cabinets and always has to do with their placement.  An interested reader could google the Cardas site for illustrations and formulas.  Not the end all, be all but should help get a person started.
