Any body using Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home ?
« on: 28 Jun 2004, 03:39 pm »
I listen to Jazz, lots of vocals and watch movies with them in conjuction with the matching Solo center channel.

What music to do listen with them?

I am looking for some feedback on Sonus Faber Grand Piano sonic character.

Thank you in advance.

You are correct, Mike.

I do have a Sonus Faber Grand Piano and would like to reach out as who might have used, heard or seen them.

Levi,
Let me make a bold suggestion and ask you to turn on your system so that you can tell us what the sonic character of your speakers are..... :P
......But seriously, I have listened to the Grand Piano's with tube electronics and it sounded great, especially on the type of music you like.  It was a couple of years ago but still remember them as being very neutral and detailed. They were on  the warm side paired with the tubes preamp(forgot which brand) it was paired with. Although not as dynamic as I like in the bass, given my taste in music, it was still sweet in the mids and top end nonetheless. Mind you, this was a straight 2-channel preamp as opposed to a processor.  Given that you like a very nice midrange and top end, see if you can source a tube pre to try out in your system and watch those babies really shine 8) . Hope this helps.

I've heard them...in Queens....at your house Levi....they sounded good for the music you like. Are you looking for a more forward sound , since the Sonus ,to me , is a more mellow sound. JMO :)

The SF Grand Piano is ok.  I like it.  Although, the wife likes the Klipsch much better (Ouch!).  It is not the last word in imaging and transparency.  I heard better sounding speakers but costed triple the price.

Thanks everyone.

I think the Sonus Faber's at your house exhibited a bit more of a metallic edge than I'm used to from SF's, though I've never heard the Grand Piano except for at your place.  I've heard SF almost exclusively with tubes and they sounded more like what I expected them to sound like (lush, full bodied, great tonal color) based upon reviews I had read of Sonus Faber's.  IMO, if I were to switch something in your system to match the speakers better, it would be to change the pre/processor to a good tube preamp.  Some speakers just take better to tubes and from what I've heard of SF (Concerto, Guarneri), they seem to like tubes.  My Reference 3a's can sound good with SS (Plinius would be a good example), but really show their stuff IMO with tube amplification.  In fact, I wouldn't buy the MM De Capo I's if I had SS.  You aren't hearing them at their best IMO.  For Jazz and Vocals, I think the Sonus Faber's i've heard are a very good speaker brand.  If you listen to rock n roll almost exclusively, then I'd probably suggest something else.

The tubes in your player are 5687s right?  Funny thing is, I am planning building a 5687 preamp I found on the web.  It is fairly inexpensive to make ~$200 (tube rectification and all).  I was planning to make it for a second system (or third, or fourth) once I get settled into my place (next weekend).

I would have also suggested trying out a tube preamp.  I would try "Loanwolf's" tube pre, and if you like it, when I finish building mine, I'll let you try that too.  If you want a cheap place to start thereafter (assuming you like the one I build) then we could build you one too.   Just a thought.

Right Josh.  I use tungsol 5687.  Sounds like a good project.

Right now, I've totalled around $160 for the parts for this preamp.  This is a variation of the Audio Note M7 preamp, using 5687 tubes.  When I get it finished, I'll have to bring it by to see how it pairs up with your source.
