Audiophool newbie looking to lurk
« on: 22 Jan 2013, 03:50 pm »
Hello everyone.

Just joined this forum to lurk and learn. I have a decent set up going, but I apparently have a permanent case of upgradeitis.

My system right now is a combined HT/ Stereo implementation and I'm quite enjoying it. I have no background in music as far as playing instruments etc. go, but I do enjoy listening to good music.

Unfortunately, I know of no audiophiles in my area that I can talk to/ visit with etc. and start listening to what other more knowledgeable folks consider good sound. I understand that at some point I should be content, but I can't live with ignorance. It isn't bliss sometimes.

In any case, just thought I'd say hi, and I'm going back to lurking.  :)

Welcome! What part of the world are you in?

Kudos on the hybrid rig...I'm a big advocate for a HT/2-channel system. Have been running things that way for many years and really enjoy it.

Welcome Maritan,  Where are you from?  Check out the "systems" tab at the top of the page.  There you can list your HT/music system and even create a gallery.

Thanks for the welcome, folks and the tip for the systems tab. I added my system to it, but no pictures yet. Not nearly as impressive as some folks, but it's a start in the right direction for me.

I live in the Greater Phoenix area in the great Arizonan desert. Or Hell as we call it during summer (115+ F  :o ).

Anyone on here from Phoenix who can take Maritan under his/her wing?

Thanks for asking Rex, but looks like I'm the ONLY person in the entire Greater Phoenix area with an ear towards good sound.

Welcome to the world of audiophilia nervosa.  It is a worthy, if somewhat quirky journey.

You're not that far from Albuquerque.  If you ever get over this way let me know and we'll spin some discs.

Welcome Maritan.  I've been to Phoenix for some fire training held at the great Arizona Biltmore.

Great city, great venue and the Phoenix FD is first class.  Yes, 115 degree can be brutal.  Don't know how you do it for the entire summer.  Being a audiophile and having a great experience with it isn't always about (imo) how much you spend or how much you have but how much you enjoy what you have.  It's ongoing...so much to learn and experience.  And, you meet great people along the way.  Like this forum.

Welcome to AC, Maritan

The last time I was in Phoenix they closed the airport because it was so hot. 126 degrees.  :duh:

If you ever find yourself in the greater Southern California area, let me know. You're more than welcomed to lurk here for a while.  :thumb:

Have fun,

Jerry

Look out for the snowbirds driving on the sidewalks.

Dave - that might happen sooner than you think. My girlfriend is contemplating taking up a job there and I might have to make frequent visits. Beware what you offer.  :)

FireGuy - good point about the enjoyment vs. expenditure. Biltmore is a very nice place, but I don't visit it too often. I know some firefighters myself through my CrossFit gym (in fact run by one), really cool people.

JerryM - yeah, I've had to deal with 120+ heat too, but I'd rather deal with the heat than shovel snow.  :) If I plan on being in SoCal, I'll let you know.  :)

Steve - snowbirds are dangerous both on and off the road. I was cutoff by one when I was on my motorcycle. Didn't end too well for me or my motorcycle. :x
