Weightlifting tweaks for your audio system
« on: 1 Jul 2004, 08:09 pm »
I just posted this reply hidden in another thread and thougt it might be of interest to some who might not see it "tucked away" in another thread.

It is describing some small products (from a weight training supply company) that can be valuable for many audio purposes.

(I have edited it a bit to be easier to understand in this post)

I have used a type of thick rubber washer (the P480 series, strangely enough from a weightlifting equipment supply company) to provide a great "protective" coupling for weights that I have added to my SUBWOOFER.  They are cheap, and can also be used between components for various uses.

I also use them to add more "air" space between components that create a lot of heat.

This company also sells "rubber coated" weight plates that can readily be stacked on speakers and components to great sonic advantages at a fraction of the cost of some of the "magic brick" types of treatments.

The rubber coated plates come in both round "olympic barbell  and regular type plates" from 2.5# up to 45# each, and they can be found as rectangular plates which can be put on CDPs, Amps, and such that may need "resonance damping" or "vibration resisitance"

See below:

Add on plates:

And Rubber Coated  Plates (Olympic and Regular):

The 240PR stands for (Plate Rubber)

Do be aware that the rubber coating may "smell" like rubber for a few days after unpacking due to curing agents, then it slowly dissipates.

These tweaks are (IMO) "better" than any of the Shakti, Mung, Shung, Fooey, Magic Brick tweaks costing much more.

I don't find them any more or less attractive (but that is my opinion)

If you peruse the site, you may also find other parts and products that addapt well to audio usages.

For example they also have Foam Rollers that could be placed under a "Butcher Block" amp or equip stand that would reduce vibration either to or from a component.

Just FYI

So to recap the:

Rubber Washers - mechanically couple and add space between components

The Rubber Coated "add on" weights - can be put on various components to damp vibration and resonances

The Rubber Coated barbell places - can be placed on speakers and Subs to "REALLY" improve bass detail, definition, tightness and depth.

The Foam Rollers - can be used under component stands, turntables and tt stands, or anything where you wish to "isolate" and dampen, from either receiving or transmitting vibrations/resonances.

Now lift those weights   and shape up your sound
